http://www.iunitek.com/iunitek/index.cf ... rt=3249813

I'm generally against laptops, but for where I am right now in my life I think it'd be an ok decision to make.

Anyt houghts on that one?

It comes with Vista. Unless you're planning on putting Linux on there and so don't care what it comes pre-loaded with, you'd be better off waiting until Windows 7, or at least until there's some guarantee that you'll be able to get a free/cheap upgrade to Windows 7.

I think all of those come with a downgrade kit to XP, I'm not a fan of vista, at all, and I have a friend with an xp disc as well (strangely enough i prefer 2000 over all). So I'm not too concerned with the OS atm.

OK, XP is a good OS. I never used 2000 actually (I've used MacOS from 7 through 10.5, Win98, XP, Vista, OpenSolaris, and a couple different Linux distros) and XP is definitely a solid choice. The only concern I have about it is that it's getting rather antiquated, but MS has promised to support it until 2014, and by then you may be ready to replace your laptop anyways (not sure how long HP laptops are good for).

Well, i've been using 2000 since ... 2000 and it's still good, so hopefully MS will support XP for as long =\ now I'm nervous, hehehe

I'm typing from a Win 2k machine right now. Pretty stable, and yes, things are already not running on it because it's too 'old'...

It's nine years old. In computer terms, that's pretty freaking ancient. But perhaps I've just gotten accustomed to never having to use an OS more than 6 months old.

But, if you like it and it's still working well, by all means stick with whatever you're using now until it fails. If it ain't broke...

I suppose, vista is just too big and finicky for a user like me, I don't do much, not like i used to anyway. I don't really understand what an XP Pro downgrade kit is..though..

It's an XP Pro install disk with all your drivers... kinda like a recovery disk. But now it's a hardware recovery... you can now use it.

And if you order online, the OEM's usually ship them with the downgrade already on them. Saves you the effort.

FYI: If it's the look you like about 2k, you CAN switch XP's GUI to look like 2k's. Pretty simple actually.
