Woo Hoo! It just needed a new drive band and the program changer unseized and lubricated with silicone grease.

the problem now becomes finding 8-tracks that haven't gummed up with age and are still playable...

I already bought a collection of 25 for $16. I paid $5 for the 8-Track. Look what this brand and model goes for on Ebay:

ah...back in the day...when hundreds of yards of 8-track tapes would be found alongside the roadways of America...;) I could never afford that, but wound up with cassette recorders of varying sophistication (the last one was 8 tracks, but in single direction, so I could create my own band...;)
