It'd be even cheaper to buy a Linux laptop or a barebones system with no OS and then put Linux on it. How much does it cost for a licensed copy of Windows? And then take into account the fact that it doesn't have an office suite, or really anything useful, by default, and most Windows users will go and fork over the cash for MS Office.

A full build of a decent gaming rig cost one guy I know about 2,000. Installing all the CRAP needed to make M$ work? Nearly another 500, and only 100 was labour.

My university mandates the use of Symantec for everyone and installs it on any computer you allow them to touch- including Macs. It's horrible. Fortunately, I use an unsupported OS and they want nothing to do with me.

I think they have skins for that... I know FlyAKite works for windows... run it through Wine... Just screw with them Orwell...

You can do anything with a gnome. Its even legal.

I know you can make it look like OSX because thats exactly what I did to tease a friend. Shes an OSX nut and was overjoyed when i sent a screen cap "proving" that I bought a second hand mac.

That'd be mean... anyways, I don't want to let them touch my computer at all. Last time I let them hold it, they broke my bootloader and put Symantec on. If they ever figured out that it was Linux, they'd probably assume I pirated it and wipe my hard drive for a full default Leopard install- which I do NOT want, since I trim over 6GB of bloat out of my Leopard before allowing it on the hard drive. But disguising it as OS X and handing it to them... it would be amusing to see the looks on their faces.

Actually I can get Windows XP Professional and Vista Business on eBay for $135. The System Builders version and local computer vendors. Only works on one computer though.

Office Home and Student goes from between $80- $90 on ebay and the Professional Edition with Outlook for about $115.

Norton goes for $17 on TigerDirect and Ebay and for the full Internet Security Package $30.

Software has gotten pretty cheap now a days. Especially if you are a PC user.

Macs are cheaper in the long term, they are way more reliable and well built than PCs.

You can buy an OEM license of Vista Home Basic for $90 or an OEM license of Vista Home Premium for $100 on Newegg. (Both 32-bit and 64-bit) Doesn't sound very unreasonable, the computer I'm using at the moment that I have built myself including all the software saved me a good six hundred to seven hundred as opposed to buying a prebuilt. Then there's the additional factor I know what's in my PC I don't have any unneeded crap with it.

Also, Windows XP SP3 Home is $90 for OEM, Professional being $140.
