Something I realized today. I was always interested in Fu Manchu movies because I was always interested in Asian makeup. That's what I noticed, the presumption that the make up would be Asian makeup applied to a white actor. I blame Lon Chaney because he occasionally played Asians, and the make up was the whole thing becoming part of the character. He also wrote the article in Encyclopedia Britannica on movie make up, and in my search for that edition, I read later editions where the article had been updated. It had pictures of Boris Karloff being made up as Mr. Wong.
