In fact, I think author/director Paul Thomas Anderson might have some personal insight into the issue.

this might explain why i like his movies so much. Actually I am struck, in reading this thread, by all the characters that are possible aspies - almost all of them have been my favorite characters in their respective shows. Now I know why.

Viktor Navorski from The Terminal may qualify as Aspie.
His manner of helping people & way of learing English may qualify although I'm still not sure.

Is Sakaki Aspie? Not Aspie?

Not gonna kill you :D I agree that Joxer is definitely an Aspie. His obsession with being a warrior (not to mention the clumsiness that prevents him from his dream), fierce loyalty to Xena and Gabrielle, and utter lack of social skills just scream Aspie.

I definitely think Cliff Claven from "Cheers" was definitely Aspie, as is Lisa Simpson, a character I related to as I played the same type of sax in the marching band in high school.

Has Temperance Brennan from "Bones" been mentioned yet?

I think she could be, along with Osaka.

Sherlock Holmes was REALLY meticulous in his investigations, had a vivid imagination and odd hobbies, learned any offbeat subjects he needed and was obsessed with the investigation until it was solved, then moved on. He could comfort people when they were upset, but he was methodical about it. He had almost no friends outside of Watson and a couple of Scotland Yard inspectors.

Batman is much the same way, with his obsession for fighting crime coming from the murder of his parents.

The Shadow was the basis for Batman and has many of the same traits, but is more cold-blooded at pursuing bad guys.

My mom thinks Spongebob has Asperger's. We brainstormed a list of reasons why:

1. He's very innocent and naive, despite the fact he's an adult.
2. He has special interests (jellyfishing and fry cooking)
3. He tries to be friendly but most of the other characters just write him off as annoying.

It's a bit of a stretch, but how about Captain Wolf Larsen from The Sea-Wolf? Focused, ruthless, brilliant at navigation but with no understanding of social interaction. Or he could just be evil and brilliant.

I'm not much of a fan of Spongebob at all, but thinking about him I can't help but agree (possibly).

(Also, it's a long shot. But how about Rom from DS9? People always assume that he is unintelligent, but his strength is that he is good at engineering.)
