Cartoons did not really get worse, in general. But there is a tendency towards great, whimsical shows like gravity falls or over the garden wall, with great production values and on the other hand horrible soul-less garbage.

There's not much middle ground, either it's damn good, or it's some garbage that was a waste of human life time for everyone involved, including the audience.

I sometimes think TV, especially the cartoons, gotten so vulgar and inappropriate, it might as well have no soul. I knew many parents who wouldn't let their own kids watch Spongebob Squarepants. I don't imagine there were also any parents who would've said the same about "Rocky & Bullwinkle" or other stuff from that era, cartoon or not.

I especially think Family Guy is very vulgar.

Yeah, they are getting inappropriate. The audience of preteens who watch Family Guy, American Dad, South Park etc is WAY too high. A lot of today's cartoons are junky remakes. Nickelodeon has an Alvin remake called ALVINNN!! ! And The Chipmunks. I'd rather see the 1980s reruns.
Cartoon Network is also running The Looney Tunes Show - which I'm sure is more vulgar than any of the 1940s-1950s shorts were.

Kids who watch vintage cartoons in this day and age should be recognized. My nephew watched the old Tom & Jerry reruns on Cartoon Network when he was younger, during summer break (it aired at noon). He's now starting high school.
They were made with much better quality, much better storylines, and much more appropriate content for children - and adults.
