I've got the book, but haven't read it yet.

I did see the movie. I agree that I was struck with how much stereotyping was done to promote the image of people with very 'eccentric' behaviour.

I don't like that in a movie especially when it is supposed to be dealing with a real human condition.

Another movie I watched in the last year that did the same thing is, "TransAmerica".
It is about a Transwoman (genetic male transitioning to live in a female gender role).
At that time, I was very involved in the local trans community and working through my own issues surrounding this.

The main character overplays his/her femininity to the point that it was clownish.
Every Transwoman I know pre and post-op tries very hard to appear the same as any 'normal' female.
They don't stand out like Felicity Huffman (or whatever her name is).
That movie sucked for me.

Mozart and the Whale was similarly disappointing in the message it conveyed, but beyond the social message I like it.

I find it a shame for those who didn't like the movie. You're missing something, SPOKANE!! !!


And, the movie was based on two people in real life. Does that mean you dislike Jerry Newport and his wife? I'd assume thats how their personalities are like in real life since the two charactees were based on them and that's how they really act. Read the book and you will see connections in it with the movie but it was a lot different because it talks about their life styles and their childhoods.

It was kind of a stupid movie. But considering it was the first ever movie focusing on some AS people (let alone in a romantic relationship), it wasn't bad. It could have been much worse, and plot aside, Hartnett and Mitchell gave good performances.

I didn't really like the movie because there was no story. Think about it. Don't most good movies have plots? The closest thing to a plot was the relationship aspect. There wasn't enough complexity in the development of the relationship on screen to constitute a strong plot, however.

The book was good, however.

It was better than "Snow Cake."

I haven't seen the movie yet, and judging by the name of the thread it sounds like I might be recommended not to see it.

Hey, I don't think Mozart and the Whale is a perfect portrayal of Asperger's either. But hey, they have to start somewhere, and just as we Aspies don't get social situations right the first time around and keep having to work our way up to "perfection", so to speak, it's the same story with neurotypicals portraying and seeking to give an acurate picture of Asperger's. And they had to start somewhere. Just give the people some time, and the benefit of the doubt, and given enough time, they'll do better next time. Remember all the trouble we have socially, well, neurotypicals have the same type of trouble knowing how to give a clear and understandable picture of Asperger's too.
