Somebody i met on Gaia Online got me into Death Note. I'm not nearly obsessed as he is, but i have threatened some of my enemies at school to call Kira on them

The series interests me because of the detective aspect of it (Light trying to avoid the police while L tracks down Kira), but be forewarned that it does have satanic references (well, we in America probably would interpret it as such, i'm not sure what the Japanese thought of it. I DO know that Anime Insider magazine referred it as "one of the darkest Shonen Jump comics ever" and it's kinda out of character when you look at other SJ anime, like Naruto and Bleach.)

It's not exactly Satanic, per se. The only thing like this is Light Yagami wishing to set himself up as God. But you are right, it's not something you should watch lightly. I call it an amorality tale, because the protagonist (Light 'Kira' Yagami) is actually a villain, and his opponent (L) is a bit of an anti-hero.

But at one point in the manga, Light's father states that the true evil is the power to kill.

There are more villainous characters than Light Yagami later on.

How many episodes has everyone seen, of the anime?

I've seen bits and pieces of various episodes... I'm going to try to collect the whole series on DVD to add to my collection of anime.

it is clever the way the author tells the story without passing judgement on anybody. lets the audience do that themselves.

I don't know, isn't FMA SJ too? Personally I'd say that covers darker stuff, even if it has a lighter tone (if it's not, then obviously just ignore this). And Bleach has more shinigami in if that's what you're thinking about. XD

Not necessarily, Bleach has some otherworldly elements, but the main plotline is pretty much a hero story. Ichigo Kurosaki fights for Rukia and to protect his friends. Light... well, he may think he's protecting humanity, but he's sure doing one hell of a botched job. I think he's psycho, personally. No sane person would believe half the righteous crap that comes out of Light's mouth. (Then again, that's partially what makes Death Note so interesting.)

Oh, as for FMA, its not Shonen Jump last time I checked. Most of SJ is produced by Viz media, but FMA is Funimation/Aniplex, which i don't think have any affiliation with SJ.

I hadn't thought about it in terms of the characters, I was thinking about the plot line by itself. ^^ It's a good point.

And I don't know anything about the distribution companies really, so thanks for clearing that one up.

I watched the Japanese subtitled version about a year ago after collecting every volume of the manga. Love it. I hope the voice over isnt too annoying because I liked the Japanese one!

I personally love L and Death Note because of the portrayal of these different intellegences. In manga its rare to find characters that are that intellegent but display eccentricities. I can relate alot to L and Near and at times Mello. Even in books its rare to find such a unique character as L, he represents the presence and potential for those with aspergers and autism and proves his worth and wisdom throughout his role in the story despite the other characters questioning his "strange" behavior and radical interrogation and investigation techniques. Though he was correct in his suspection of Light it makes me irritated that it was because of his approach and reasoning that he offered to his research team that he wasn't caught sooner!
