Hire Apocolypto and watch that. I pretty much guarantee you'll like it if you like violent anime.

Shall we Dance

No, not the crappy second rate barely a shadow of the original one with Richard Gere. The original Japanese version is far more sweet.

Black Rain

Another Japanese flick -- older this time -- about a young woman living in the aftermath (a few years later) of the Hiroshima A-Bomb. And about the effect that it has on people after years -- fear of cancer, shellshock &c.

Waterboys

More comical. Again Japanese. Some high school boys decide that they want to form a synchronised swimming team. Love especially the ending.

One of the great things about living in the Washington DC area was being able to go to the museums to watch foreign language films for free.

Just before I left, they had a series of Romanian films that were quite good.

"California Dreaming" was great

Another Amelie fan here. If you like Japanese romantic comedies, Adrenaline Drive is certainly worth renting. For kung-fu parodies, check out any Stephen Chiau movie - my favorite is The God of Cookery.

If they'd let us put anime then those would be up on my top list too.

I deliberately excluded anime because then the whole thread would be anime and we wouldn't learn anything new.

I just watched Angel-A which is a french film about someone in a lot of debt who decides to commit suicide. He gets rescued by a tall blonde "slut" who claims to be an angel.

He's got only a few hours to come up with a huge sum of money to pay off the mob.

very, very cool.

All B/W with some fantastic shots of Paris.

Most a mine been said, but I actually got a kick out of the Hungarian movie Kontroll. (I really ain't seen too many non-English language films)

Silly, dark, a lot of fun. Not exactly high art, and way pretentious, but hey...
