Yep. Richard Wilson was from Greenock and Annette Crosbie was from Edinburgh. Richard Wilson has a wonderful Scottish accent still. It is dulled down after being in London for such a long time but it is most definitely still their. He just dulled it down for the program. I don't think David Renwick chose Richard Wilson for the part because of his Scottish connections. He just happened to be Scottish. They picked Annette I suppose to make it more believable.

Both of them live in London now I think.

I agree with you though, it's not particularly Scottish, just happened to have two Scottish actors as the leads.

Father Ted was quite good too, made out all Irish people were drunks etc but that was written by Irish writers.

well, that's stereotyping for you...

'ere, eammon - what's with your manic use of emoticons in your post above? (wink).

I don't think David Renwick particularly mean't Victor Meldrew to be thought of moaning about everything. All of his problems were real problems that would upset most people, he was just a bit unlucky in life and very vocal about it. It is still one of my favourite programs.

Actually i quite like stereotyping in comedies. (anyone who has been in Ireland will recognise some of the characters in Father Ted) I dont mind serious dramas having a lot of Scottish or Irish tramps or criminals because there is quite a lot but im just surprised they seem to have hardly any good characters from up here in it because there are some decent Scot's in London too.

I agree with you whole-heartedly about the lack of Scottish role models on our screens. Ewan McGregor has managed to do it, but the film that broke him through the stardom barrier was actually about Scottish Druggies - another stereotype.

Another problem is that as actors they often lose their accent to be able to fit into english roles - people then forget that they are scottish.

You can understand why Scottish people who have made it big try their best to promote new Scottish talent.

It got old by the last few seies and was never the best anyway. Out of that list Blackadder, fools and horses and open all hours and faulty towers are the best. DONT ARGUE WITH ME. Well do if you want but dont expect me to change my opinion.

I disagree... I think you SHOULD change your opinion... :) David Renwick is a comedy god. Just think, One Foot in the Grave, Jonathan Creek, Love Soup... What else do you want!

I voted for Blackadder, but it was very closely tied with Only Fools and Horses and Vicar of Dibley. I was kinda disappointed that My Famly (a show...) wasnt an option

I do like my family. Although it went through a couple of "bad" periods.

It's an Irish show, but strangely it actually came in at number 12 in the BBC's list of "Best ever UK sitcoms".
Father Ted was certainly one of my favourites. :)

There's a comedy series I never saw, but I'd like to see, called Ripping Yarns. It starred Michael Palin. It was kind of overshadowed by Fawlty Towers I think.
I might take a risk and buy Ripping Yarns through amazon. :P
