The Shining is not a horror movie, maybe that is the whole problem for you, nextfact.

It is about being perceptive. The little kid was, and so was his father. Only the little kid knew he was perceptive ( the Shining) and his dad didn't, they were both affected and handled it differently.

yeah i always found it overrated and Nicholson's performance isnt' that good.

i think it's overrated because it was directed by Kubrick (who I normally think is great) so ....

Havent seen all the shining, The Mist was very silly i think, i mean it turned out to be more like a sci fi really, it was very gory and kinda creepy.

The SImpsons did a version of the shining, it was very funny, Homer went psycho like Jack Nichelson.

And the shining also got a mention by Jensen Ackles in Supernatural.

anyways. Some Steven King movies are very good, Such as Secret Window that involves Johnny Depp, and Lawnmower man, even though the name was taken from steven king....

Must watch 'Dark City' with Rufus Sewel, et al. It's so bad it's good. I like horror movies and on the campy side. 'Lair of the White Worm' is just perfect - love that movie!

The worst movie? I vote 'Wizard of Oz.' Just inane and Dorothy get a traumatic brain injury at the start, then downhill from there. Toto is still getting the needle (Phenobaritol) regardless of his delusion owner. Did you know the green witch later advertised for Folger's Coffee?

I actually liked 'Dark city', although I put my higher brain functions on hold to watch it...

Yeah, MS3T has a whole stable-full of worse movies. Never actually seen 'the Shining'; but I've had a bone to pick with Steven King since one of his TV ads said 'I'm going to scare the HELL out of you'...sorry, Stevarino...no...you're not...

It's hard to top 'Plan 9 from outer space' for sheer awfulness...you Earthlings are stupid, stupid, STUPID!...

Sorry you didn't care for "Wizard of Oz". Being from Kansas, I have always gotten the razz on being "Dorothy" because the movie is all anyone has heard of Kansas, anyway. I perceived from the movie if I wanted to go to live in the Emerald City, I had best get out of Kansas and the rest of the world ". . . Would be Oz. . ."
I patterned much on my life on Dorothy wandering around in an enchanted world, meeting people along the way, looking for that place that would release her from what ever dream she woke to.

Anyway, I just wanted to say that I knew the spirit of the movie before it became schlock, and have been comforted by it seeming to understand my bewilderment in the world before my senses tuned more to 'reality.'

okay, the main theme of the movie was helplessness. the whole movie tried to achieve an atmosphere of general insecurity. it achieved that for me. they had no one to turn to and no where to go. it made me second guess staying in a nice cabin in the middle of nowhere for a week. i think they screwed up the movie when they cast jack nicholson. jack torrance was supposed to be a very calm and "average" guy. that's how stephen king wrote him(i read the book). i don't think of calmnesss when i think of jack nicholson. try watching the movie alone in a dark room at night during a thunderstorm.

I do like the part when the movie transitions from gray scale to color - that's the best! I love Toto and it hurt that he's still going to get the needle. I read the book series and this was better. I like The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe!

you know my mom turned me onto the fact that this was the FIRST color movie, ever, and the changing from black and white to color was SENSATIONAL to theatre audiences back then.

i hate it when people use worst movie ever as in, worst movie in their generation, or worst theve seen...worst movie ever means worst movie ever..from first to last. Though Im willing to narrow it to the first one, to the latests one

True, there's bad, but then there's almost worse. Mystery Science Theatre rocks.
Chick flicks are at the bottom though.

Granted it may be hard to impossible to pin it to one movie. But I'm sure we could make a top XXXX list of worst movies ever....
Of course it goes without saying ones made to be bad or as mockerys will be left out.

i did not think "the shining" was that bad. i am not scared by horror movies, but they can sometimes be interesting to watch.
i think it is among the better horror movies i have seen.
i read once that it was responsible for one of the largest number of psychiatric admissions due to a movie when it was released.
there was something about the music apparently that triggered them.
i tried to find reference to this on the internet but i can not. i think "2001 - a space odyssey" was responsible for the largest number of psychiatric admissions to hospitals.

the worst horror movie i can remember seeing is an old one called "monsters from the moon" and it was hilariously inadequate in every respect. the lack of imagination employed in the creation of the title of the movie was reflected by the acting and the plot and the script and the "special" effects contained within it.

one of the best horror movies i have seen is an australian one called "wolf creek". (i know i am not only "off topic" but i am "ectopic" as well to talk about the best movies).

"wolf creek" is about 2 english backpackers who hook up with an austalian man who acts tough until he is faced by really dangerous people. they hire a car and go sightseeing in the outback. they all leave the car and return many hours later to find it will not start.
they do not know what to do and night falls and someone drives by and stops to help them. this older man tows their car about 100 miles to his property where he says he can fix it.
they all think he is very cool and amusingly raconteur-ish they like and trust him.
(they do not know he was the one who sabotaged their car in reality.)

here is a quick clip of a scene from that movie "wolf creek" where they are back at his property and they start to see his bad side. it is creepy. he is a brilliant actor.

they go to sleep in the end of he clip because they are drugged, and when they awaken (after the end of this clip) ...it is their worst nightmare.
