Detour.
1945 crime noir film in which a piano player turned hitchhiker tells his story of how he ends up a vagrant wandering the roadways. He claims he was hitchhiking from New York to California to meet up with his sweetheart and musical partner, when the man who picks him up inadvertently dies. Assuming the dead man's identity and taking his car and money, he runs into a female hitchhiker who turns out to be a grifter who blackmails him. The she accidentally dies, too. I'm thinking this is either an unbelievably bad movie, or brilliant storytelling of an unreliable narrator.
It was an unbelievably bad movie. The cherry on top was instead of just pulling the phone cord out of the wall jack, he tried to pull it though the door. I'd like to make a clip of that scene with
Yakety Sax playing.
Which I think supports the theory that he's an unreliable narrator. Yeah, he was just trying to disconnect the cord by somehow attempting to tear it in half(?). She just somehow got the cord wrapped around her neck. Just like he opened the car door and the bookie fell out and hit his head on a rock. And then he steals the guy's clothes and money, and takes the car, as he fears the cops will think he killed the guy. Yeah, yeah! That's the ticket!
