Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame
I rather enjoyed it, but it was incredibly dark for a "children's" movie. Frollo has got to be the best (worst?) villain I have ever seen, especially when you take into account that there were probably a lot of men like him in real life at various points in history.
I identified a lot with Quasimodo's personality - kindhearted, yet often angry or sad. And always up for a hug.

And yes I do feel bad that he didn't get the girl, but I think it had more to do with the fact that he never had the chance to make his true feelings known to Esmeralda rather than as a result of her being shallow as a lot of people claim.
I've never read the book, but I was told that in the end, Esmeralda died, and that Quausimodo had held her body in the dump till he died. Long after, workmen found a female skeleton held by a horribly deformed skeleton. When they were moved, both skeletons collapsed into dust, mixing together.
Now, if that isn't dark and sad, I don't know what is.
