The Family Guy episode "Screams of Silence: The Story of Brenda Q". I love Family Guy, but seriously, this one made me cry because Brenda's boyfriend, Jeff, abuses her constantly in this episode. It reminded me too much of how my father used to do the same thing to my mother, and this was too much for me to handle, so I turned it off.

The Angel episode "You're Welcome", when Cordelia died. I've watched emotional episodes of television before, but I think that was the first time I ever broke down and actually cried when a character died.

Several LAW AND ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT episodes:

"In the Wee Small Hours"--there's a scene where Eames has to testify in court about her partner's (Goren's) mental stability. She's forced to tell the truth about what she first thought of him when they were paired up--the look on her face, and the sound of her voice, is heartbreaking--I think she has to admit that she initially wanted a different partner. She does get to say (finally) that he's one of the best partners she's ever had, and a damn good detective. The fact that he is right there, listening to all this, and his expression DOES NOT CHANGE, makes it even worse for her (and the audience).

Of course, afterwards, when she's apologizing to him, he just shrugs nonchalantly and says "I am an acquired taste" and that's the end of it.

There's a later episode where she's kidnapped by Goren's former mentor (or, rather, his daughter) as a "test" of sorts, and Goren's going crazy trying to find her--his fear for her safety...wow.

The one where he finds out that his real father is this psychotic killer who's in prison for life--making him question who (and what) he is, all over again.

The ending episodes where he's kind of "lost it" and is seeing a psychologist. Every emotion he's ever had comes pouring out. Vincent D'Onofrio is a brilliant actor.

The episode of M*A*S*H ("Abyssinia, Henry") that announced the death of Lt. Col Henry Blake (played by McLean Stevenson) - his plane was shot down over the Sea of Japan by North Koreans. Walter "Radar" O'Reilly was in such a state of shock that he walked into the operating room to announce the news without scrubbing up and putting on a mask.

I cried myself to sleep that night - March 17, 1975 - even though I was 17 at the time.

Since a few people have mentioned it. I think this one particularly sucker-punches people because it's so out of character for the show and unexpected, and paired with that song too.

I've always heard that Stevenson pissed off the M*A*S*H* people by demanding to be released from his contract at the height of the shows success, so they wrote him out in such a way that it was impossible for him to come back later.

@Dox47: oh yes, of course. (Although, after BENDER'S BIG SCORE, it lost some of its emotional impact.)

And there's also this:
