The best way I can describe this is that it's a British answer to those American sherriff in a small town type shows. Set in a fictional town in Yorkshire (north end of the country), a divorced single mother struggles to balance her home life and her job as a local police sargeant fighting drugs and abusers. Things take a sinister turn however as a disgruntled employer (who was initially refused a pay rise in order to pay for his daughter to go to a good school) decides to kidnap his boss's daughter.
