I know u mean at least some snapshots and scenes just like they show people working away at the start,
but the book depicts the dad as a kind person so they wouldn't show that.

I guess it could be done if they showed OTHER families being that way since that doesn't take away from the character.

But overall that wouldn't be realistic bcuz this film was meant to be from Scarlett's (and somewhat Rhett's) self-absorbed POV - as the book was-

I dont think someone so spoilt and doted over like her could care less , unless for 'juicy gossip',
what ppl around her were going through.

esp the slave WOMEN --who as noted before she was usually horrible and mean towards.
She cared only as it pertained to her.


Only excellent writers can handle a more comprehensive, multi-faceted narrative to include various sides of history and levels of society. Like in The Tale of Two Cities.

Even so they show nastiness ..treating slaves as emotional punching bags.

She idolizes her mom, so instead she takes out all her pent up resentment
on the person she sees as the intruder between her and her mom

(which was the mom's doing so is totally unfair)..
the woman who is more intelligent and caring than anyone else around her and can see situations more clearly than the others.

I know Melanie is shown to be the person she respects over time but Scarlett only seems to respect and value ppl who are at a distance from her.
Not those closest. Rhett even points this out.

They do somewhat show her being 'humbled' and treating people more equally, as she tries to be independent and make things work. But again the story is all about her.

It's kind of amusing how she went from spoiled pampered rich girl to independent war survivor to spoiled pampered rich girl all over again. It's like that old saying "leopards never change their spots". Iow a person's personality just is what it is.

Thats what my dad enjoyed too. And thats what my mom wd get mad because she doesnt understand why people let her get away with things (except once and even that was mild) when they were all enduring the same upheavals and trauma..

I guess that was the privilage of being a wealthy white plantation owner's daughter. Kinda like how in Europe the royals could get away with abusing the lower classes. Think of the rich plantation owners in the deep south as the nobility and the slaves as well as the poorer white farmers as the peasants who were exploited and abused.

Actually my XH's sister had a 'suitor' and his mom was from India...
I was talking to her while my MIL was getting ready.. So at one point I asked her if she had been to India recently and she said no I don't like to visit anymore. I asked her why. She said 'because the servants, you know, they are beginning to know their rights'
! !! !

Ohhh my bad. I thought she was referring to Scarlett lol

Oh my mom.. Yeah zhe was.but this other lady... She was in all earnestness complaining that she stopped visiting because the servants were starting to know their rights ..

From which one can infer she must have been mistreating them before.

That is pretty messed up. I'm sorry to hear that.

Documentary films by nature are more realistic than Hollywood fantasy movies.

If you watch films from another era they are likely to contain and promote dated ideas. Not only racism but misogyny, women were always getting slapped around as a joke. And of course in "Gone With The Wind" marital rape is depicted as romantic.

"Gone With The Wind" was not real in its depiction of slavery but it was very real in its displaying the lost cause mythology views popular for decades and how misogyny was viewed.

I can understand you needing to rebel against your Georgia neighbors who all probably still buy into the mythology that GWTW is based upon.

Mom and Dad persuaded sis and I to watch it in an actual movie theater back around 1970 when we were school kids. It was actually released to theaters- so we could see it on actual big screen. Since we live in the DC area -which is just outside of the old Confederacy- we weren't so caught up in the myth. So I could enjoy it by viewing the movie for what it is: as an earlier generation's romanticized view of an even earlier period in history. Took it with a grain of salt.

The novel was written, and then put on the silver screen during the Great Depression of the Thirties when folks sought escape -including escape into other periods of history.

Quite OT but the word Georgia keeps making me think of Georgia as in Baku, Azerbaijan area. Because my favourite fictional book happens to Ali and Nino, where Nino is the Georgian girl that Ali falls in love with. And Georgians are known for being beautiful like how Scarlett is, and it's also romantic, so I keep mixing it up every time you guys write it, and have to remind myself.
