Lone Survivor. Based on the failed mission "Operation Red Wings". Reminded me of a film called the Guardian except it had Seals instead of Rescue swimmers. I enjoyed it, moved at a decent pace and I didn't feel bored at any time. The rl pictures of the soldiers at the end during the credits made me cry.

12 Years a Slave. Chiwetel Ejiofor needs to win the Oscar for best actor, his portrayal of Soloman Northup was mesmerising. The film itself was very good too, it is quite long but keeps you interested all the way through. I think this years best picture will be disputed between: Prisoners, Rush, Lone Survivor and 12 Years a Slave. If I was a betting man, which I'm not, I would go with Prisoners, I like mystery crime thrillers so there is an element of bias.

Carrie. It is a remake of the original, I love horror films and I find most remakes to be disappointing, most recently I thought the remake of the Evil Dead was rubbish. Returning to the Carrie remake, it is one of the few exceptions where I think the remake was better than the original. I think she nailed the Prom sequence perfectly and did justice to the book, which I thought the original failed in, as in the original they made it look like she wasn't in control, where as in the book Carrie is enjoying slaughtering her class mates. Anyway, I really enjoyed it, the bullying scenes are very brutal, so if this type of stuff upsets you, you shouldn't watch it.

You're Next. Nice little slasher film, takes place in a house with a family gathering over the holiday period. Has the right amount of character building in the start. The acting was good for a slasher and the film has a few nice twists. I liked the song from the opening sequence, it is my most played song for the week. One criticism would be the masks the antagonists wore, seemed a bit cheap. All in all if you're into slashers You're Next should be your next stop, pun intended.

The Last House In The Woods.

Italian horror film about a young couple out in the woods who are attacked by a gang of rapist/thugs. They are fortuitously rescued by a couple driving by, who bring the two back to their house in the woods. There, they discover they've gone from the frying pan to the fire, when it's revealed that the married couple plans on feeding them to their cannibal son.
While the story had the basis of a good horror film, the amateurish cinematography, writing, and special effect gore detract too much from the end product.

I concur. IMO, Eric Bana, who also starred in Hanna, is a VERY underrated actor.

Festen, by Thomas Vinterberg, partly because I'm planning on seeing Jagten which plays next week at our local village theater.

Very powerful performance, much of the movie gives you a feel like it takes place in real time (it doesn't, as it's only just over an hour and a half long), and offers a look in how a family's dynamics can grow thoroughly warped with only giving the viewer a snippet out of their lives. Not a pleasant movie, but left a great impression.

Very true Sir. I thought he was interesting in Munich. Chopper was good as well.

Last night I watched...
Life-
An underrated movie staring Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence. Also Ned Beatty and Bernie Mac. Wyclef Jean did the soundtrack to the film. I have read about him in my politics magazine. He ran for the Presidency of Haiti.

I liked the first half of the movie, but I thought the second half slipped into a lot of Star Trek franchise clichés, which had mostly been avoided up until that point. I didn't even mind the parallels between Into Darkness and a certain other Trek movie, although at a certain point the hommage gets a little bit too much 'on the nose'.

I sustain that Zachary Quinto is this cast's strongest asset. Though the character he plays is a lot more like Tuvok than like Spock imho.

Glad you liked Lone Survivor. Peter Berg is definitely making up for that crap movie that was Battleship.

As for 12 Years A Slave, I concur about Chiwetel Ejiofor's performance. His performance was powerful and the movie as a whole had a strong emotional potency to it. However, I think the Best Picture nominees will be: 12 Years A Slave, Gravity, The Wolf Of Wall Street,
Saving Mr. Banks, Her, Lone Survivor, Inside Llewyn Davis, American Hustle, Captain Phillips, and Nebraska, but that's just my opinion.

I couldn't get past 20mins with Battleship, dialogue was terrible. I didn't think it was going to be good with Rihanna having a part in it, wish I had listened to my instincts.

I forgot about Captain Phillips, Tom Hanks was very good, solid film as well ofc. I still need to see some of the ones you mentioned, particularly looking forward seeing The Wolf of Wall Street. I thought Gravity was overrated, not sure it brought anything new to the genre except a bigger budget for special effects with George Clooney and Sandra Bullock, perhaps that's enough. Whenever a new claustrophobia type film comes out I tend to compare it to Moon and Buried; as I thought these were some of the best in that genre of recent times. Maybe I'm too harsh, but when a film has 8.4/10 on imdb I expect to be blown away at the end, Gravity didn't come close for me.
