Catch Me If You Can

The famous 2002 Steven Spielberg picture featuring Tom Hanks and Leonardo Di Caprio. Based on the real events of the late 60s, Frank Abnagale begins forging cheques and poses as a Pan-America airline pilot. What follows is a cat-and-mouse game between the FBI and Abnagale as he jumps across the country as a doctor and then a Louisiana parish member.

I didn't think I'd enjoy this but I actually really did in the end - great character acting from both Hanks and Di Caprio with a strange pseudo-family relationship forming. Plus, great music and fantastic production values - they really captured the optimistic glossy light of the 60s.

A recommended watch.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Part Two)

The concluding chapter of the Warner Bros Harry Potter movie series, adapted from the tail end of J.K. Rowling's book of the same name.

I had to go away and think about whether I liked this or not... for fans or people who grew up with the movie series, I can see why David Yates' work would be seen as a satisfying finish. I personally thought it was okay... if not a bit saccharine but then again, I didn't like the final novel because by that point, it felt like J.K. Rowling was specifically writing for the screen.

Anyway, I lasted all the way through and I did get misty-eyed right at the end, so I don't regret watching it.

Alien (1979)

Ridley Scott's classic sci-fi horror about the crew of a commercial starship that heads to investigate a distress signal from a barren and desolate planet. In the process, one crew member is brought back on board with a parasitic life form attached to his face, which rapidly grows into a malevolent, sinister extra-terrestrial that hunts down the remaining crew members one by one.

Remember: In space, no one can hear you scream

Anchorman 2

Hilarious beyond belief! Set in 1980, this follow-up features Ron Burgundy down on his luck {at first} after he is let go from his anchoring job at a news channel in New York City. After being recruited to anchor a 24-hour news channel, Ron sets out to find his old pals: womanizing investigative reporter Brian {Paul Rudd}, cowboy sportscaster Jim {David Koechner}, and dim-witted weatherman Brick {Steve Carell}.

This may have been Will Ferrell's movie, but IMO, Steve Carell stole the show as Brick.
Brick falls in love with Joanie {Kristin Wiig}, an office worker at the 24-hour news channel who is just as dim-witted as Brick is.

The movie was worth seeing. Highly recommended.

Robin Hood: Men in Tights

Mel Brooks Robin Hood parody. Mostly spoofs Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and The Adventures of Robin Hood.

The Black Swan

Not to be confused with Natalie Portman's 2010 movie. Notorious pirate Henry Morgan is made Governor of Jamaica and vows to rid the seas of piracy.

Aliens (1986)

Following the events of Alien, lone survivor Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) awakens after 57 years in hypersleep. After losing her space-flight license at a testimony, she discovers that the planet where she encountered the Xenomorph is now home to a terraforming colony.

When contact with the colony is abruptly lost, Ripley reluctantly agrees to accompany a hi-tech unit of space marines to investigate and possibly wipe out her nightmares forever. Upon arriving, they encounter a large hive of the vicious extraterrestrials and it quickly descends into a fight for survival.

A real rollercoaster ride of a movie. It's the deleted scenes that make it timeless, including the sentry gun scenes and Ripley learning of her daughter's death.

Dear Wendy, directed by Thomas Vinterberg, and starring Jamie Bell, Mark Webber, Alison Pill, Danso Gordon, and others.

Despite reviews panning this movie, I actually quite enjoyed it. The story is about a smalltown boy who works as a store clerk, and stars up a pacifist shooting club with other young misfits. They get more and more entrenched in their little cult as the movie progresses.

'Wendy' is the name the main character gives to his gun.

Ritual.

Okay horror movie about a Texas man who gets a call from his hysterical wife, who he is estranged from. Finding her in a cheap motel, he discovers she has stabbed a strange man repeatedly, after claiming he had tried to rape her. Digging himself into a hole, he tries to help her escape without entanglements with the police. First off, find who the victim was. Discovering a video camera in the man's car, he and his wife watch a recording of a cultic ritual human sacrifice. From there, things get much, much worse.

The Ipcress File

A 1965 British spy thriller starring Michael Caine, popularly known as the anti-thesis of James Bond due to its more down-to-earth tone and the plot staying mostly in England. Former commoner criminal Harry Palmer (Caine) is recruited by an unnamed organisation to determine the reason why notable British scientists are suddenly leaving their roles, disturbingly showing a sudden and severe lack of aptitude in their respective professions.

Pretty good stuff and so stylishly 60s.

I like it better than the first Hobbit movie, but I still think the Lord of the Rings movie were much better. I feel that the Hobbit movies got too much of the Hollywood treatment, too slick visually and not enough character development, maybe because there are so many of them.

Also, the name of the 2nd movie aggravates me since Smaug doesn't show up until the end and there is no desolation involved.
