Tomboy

A 2011 French film by Céline Sciamma dealing with body dysmorphic disorder and sexual ambiguity.

10-year-old Laure moves to Paris with her family as her mother is due to give birth to the third child of the family. However, upon meeting one of the neighbourhood children, Lisa, Laure is mistakenly identified as a boy due to her androgynous looks. Going along with the lie, Laure interacts with Lisa and the rest of the kids as "Mikael", even going insofar to develop a possible romantic relationship with Lisa and letting 'his' sister Jeanne, in on the secret.

However, a fight in the woods just before the end of the summer holidays leads to Laure's real gender getting exposed. The film ends ambiguously with a conversation between Lisa and Laure just before the school term starts.

An interesting film this was, and Laure's very young actress, Zoé Héran, performed admirably in dealing with the tricky subject matter.

I actually saw that film a while ago. Yeah...it was done really well. Don't think Zoe hasn't been in much else after that movie. however, during the movie, she reminded me of Brian Bonsall. (with the hair, face and the talent...)

RoboCop 2014; a solid, well-made effort. 8/10 all the way.

All Is Lost

Robert Redford stars alone in this 2013 film as a nameless man who's boat gradually sinks after hitting a shipping container at sea and fights to survive. Very little dialogue is used.

Just finished Ender's Game. It was a good adaptation of a great novel. I can hardly believe OSC wrote it. That guy definitely has a talent for cognitive dissonance.

It's too bad they didn't have time to develop the Demosthenes and Locke subplot. I think the Shadow books would make better sequels than the rest of the Ender quartet. But that's just me.

Ender's Game

A young and intelligent Ender Wiggin is recruited by the International Military to lead the fight against the Formics, a little known alien race which nearly annihilated the human race in a previous invasion, but all is not what it seems.

I have got to see this film. I have heard mixed things about this film. But I LOVE science fiction.

The Lego Movie
They finally made a movie about that box of plastic bricks and yellow people that I played with in my childhood.
It was great and made me laugh a lot!

My wife and I just caught Robocop, and it was great. My only criticism is that the villains were rather lackluster, compared to the original movie's villains played by Ronny Cox and that guy from That Seventies show with the huge head who played Red. Otherwise, it was pretty spectacular.

From a purely movie sci-fi pov it's pretty good. The design of the battle-school was very interesting... The movie could have used an extra thirty minutes to fully develop the moral and ethical issues in the story. However, they opted to use a kind of short-hand that really only works if you've actually read and thought about the book. It's probably just as well that they devoted more time to 'splosions and less to philosophy. I'm not sure modern audiences have a taste for thoughtful SF. They want sound and fury.

The movies on DVD which my wife and I got each other for Valentines Day, On The Road, and Chronicle. As I've already written about them the first time I watched them, I will only make mention that I've watched them again, and to say that both are very enjoyable.

Robocop {2014 remake}

Excellent movie. This was one of the better remakes that I've seen in a long while.

Joel Kinnaman gave a great performance as Alex Murphy/Robocop and Samuel L. Jackson was a riot as Pat Novak, the host of a TV talk show where Novak expresses support for the Robocop program.

I really just wish it had a R rating. I feel strongly this movie was held back from it's potential.
