The Monuments Men

Based on the true story of a group of soldiers tasked to saving valuable pieces from art that were stolen by the Nazis during World War II.

Yes, the movie is historically inaccurate and yes, there is A LOT of humor in the movie, but otherwise, The Monuments Men is an enjoyable war movie with great performances from all cast members.

I watched this as well. I enjoyed it. I will now be watching The Rape Of Europa, a documentary that tells the story of art during WWII. It goes into much more depth then the Monuments men ever could.

I'll be watching this too. In fact, a company in my area was one of the producers of this documentary.

A Thousand Cuts.

Psychological horror film about a soulless horror movie director named Lance Ross, famous for making a piece of violent schlock called A Thousand Cuts, is kidnapped and held captive by an obsessive, grieving father whose daughter had been raped, tortured, and murdered by a lunatic who claimed to have been inspired by the Ross' movie. The father claims he has also kidnapped Ross' sister, who he threatens to also rape, torture, and kill, unless Ross commits suicide. Over all, a pretty decent flick that makes your skin crawl, for such a small budget movie with no recognizable actors.

Born of Hope: The Ring of Barahir
A 2009 fantasy-adventure fan film directed by Kate Madison and written by Paula DiSante (as Alex K. Aldridge) that is based on the appendices of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. The film centres on the communities affected by Sauron's war; the story of Arathorn II and his relationship with Gilraen, and the importance of the Dúnedain bloodline.

Gravity

Sandra Bullock and George Clooney are the only on-screen actors who are astronauts that become stranded in space. Intense with excellent visuals.

Synecdoche, New York

A 2008 post-modern drama. To put it most simply, theatre Caden Cotard (Phillip Hoffman) blurs the distinction between reality and fiction as he tries to put together a play documenting his chaotic life, riddled with physical ailments and alienation from his wife, his daughter and series of lovers.

I wouldn't recommend this to anyone not familiar with post-modernism or the Droste effect (that is a picture within a picture within a picture, etc).

There is a lot of philosophical, psychological and sociological messages and commentary intertwined with the metaphysical plot. The central character, true to his name, suffers from the delusion that despite the fact he is well and truly alive, he himself is a non-existent entity between neither life nor death (hence why the play is centred on the events he experienced himself, possibly trying to prove to himself he was alive after all?). It certainly took me a while to work out the narrative from his own distorted perspective.

That said, I found this an oddly compelling stylised examination of the eternal human quandary of what constitutes one's self - their own view of the world or is it how others see them? Bit like the final two episodes of Evangelion really, but for grown-ups.

The Lego Movie as exemplified by my avatar.

Absolute genius. Incredibly heartfelt, clever story, and truly insane wit. It's the epitome of all things Lego, and I await for the sequel. :D

"Her," was surprisingly good. It's nowhere near as perverted as it might seem from the synopsis. Phoenix plays a decent, and well adjusted guy, who is kind of forced to deal with some unreasonable things.
