I have seen many autism movies but, the ONE that really sticks in my head is "Temple Grandin". She really told/tells them how the cattle must be moved. It all made so much sense. 8)

I don't know about any of you, but I just can't bring myself to watch "Mozart and the Whale" for two reasons:
1. On the surface, it sounds like it just won't be very good (then again, I'm not one for rom-coms).
2. (the more important reason) I've interacted with Jerry Newport, the guy on whom Josh Hartnett's character is based. And I've found him to be a raving bigot, with tendencies toward antisemitism. Thus, watching it would be dignifying him, when such a person should have no dignity at all.

I feel because the girl dumps him and the movie says people with AS are like kids at any age, people with AS can't have relationships. It is the wrong message to send.

I have been struggling with relationships all my life. I don't need someone to think "He has AS like that guy in that movie, he'll never be right. I won't give him a chance."

Movies with possible characters with AS/Autism:
-Awakenings
-Edward Scissorhands
-The Wizard (LONG time ago)
-Sherlock Holmes
-A Beautiful Mind (not 100% convinced he had AS or Autism, but other traits match up)

Movies with confirmed characters with AS/Autism
-Rain Man
-Adam
-Mary & Max

I getting Temple Grandin today via Netflix, so I'll check it out as soon as I get it.

Out of all the films I've watched where the character is diagnosed with ASD, I've only liked Temple Grandin and Mary & Max.

Films I've watched so far with ASD characters:
Temple Grandin
Mary & Max
BenX
Snow Cake
Adam
Mozart and the Whale
Rain Man
What's Eating Gilbert Grape
Autism the Musical
Clay Marzo: Just Add Water
Horse Boy
Billy The Kid (Documentary)

To watch list with ASD characters:
My Name is Khan
Chocolate (Thai)
Running Boy (Korean)
The Black Balloon
The Boy Who Could Fly

Zero Effect

Maybe. He's not explicitly labeled with it but Daryl Zero has major problems dealing with people but he's a super genius private investigator. He won't even meet his clients in person he hires an assistant to do it for him.

My favourites are:

Mary and Max: an Australian claymation about a little girl who writes to an American pen-pal who is revealed to have Asperger syndrome.

Ben X: A Belgian film (in Flemish with subtitles) portraying a high functioning autistic teenager who is mercilessly bullied by his peers. Interesting story with a brilliant twist.

Miracle run: Okay, so not a particularly accurate portrayal, but any movie I can watch on Youtube must be good. About autistic twins who both grow up to be savants. Apparently based on a true story.

Marathon (AKA malaton): a Korean film about an autistic man who becomes a marathon runner.

A TV series I watched called 'feather boy' (based on a book by the same name) seemed to have an autistic protagonist. Not diagnosed, but quite typically AS. He wasn't like really clever or nerdy either so it makes it more likely.

Just saw Temple Grandin and I thought it was pretty good. Now I see why Claire Danes swept the Globes, Emmys, and SAG Awards.

I watched Mozart and the Whale for the first time two nights ago after renting it from Netflix. Mixed feelings. Josh Hartnett and Radha Mitchell are terrific. In both characters, there were some things I could relate to and others I couldn't. The support group was just a bunch of symptoms, not characters. Here's "obsessed with the weather" guy, here's "can't control the tone of her voice" girl, etc. A lot of the actors seemed to be following the Dustin Hoffman template. The biggest flaw is the use of awful pop music every time a character was sad about something. Hartnett and Mitchell are so good that I enjoyed it overall, but I'm not sure I would champion it as something that NTs should watch if they want to understand Asperger's. I recently bought the book version because a private seller on Amazon was selling a new hardcover copy for $0.01 (plus $3.99 shipping) and I couldn't pass it up. Hopefully it'll be a bit better.

I rented Mary and Max and watched it last night. Loved it. Far more accurate, at least for me. Max is practically me, aside from the fact that he's Jewish and obese. Far more relatable than Mozart and the Whale. Funny, smart, and never pandering. Excellent film.
