I rewatched "The Silence of The Lambs" a few days ago. I'm still mesmerized by that movie.

Any Day Now

I love Alan Cumming and Garret Dillahunt and I am a fan of Indie movies. This is such a bittersweet tail.

Alan Cumming can't sing though.

Les Misérables

I saw this film in the theater when it was released, and I received it in the mail from Netflix yesterday. I really like this movie. Honestly, there are a few songs I find annoying. That's no judgement on the songs. I just happen to wince when I hear them. Music is just subjective. But I like the story, and I Dreamed a Dream is heartbreaking. I should maybe read the book. I have to say that the scenes with Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter singing Master of the House flash images of George Costanza in my mind. It's okay. They are suppose to be funny, and Seinfeld is helping.

It was not my intention to make this an Anne Hathaway day, but I do have The Dark Knight Rises up next in the queue. And then I have Interstellar. I won't enter those two movies. Just assume I'm watching one now, and the other later.

Pawn Sacrifice

I enjoyed it. I remember when Bobby and Boris played. I don't remember it super clearly, but I remember it being a big deal. I had learned out to play in the late sixties from a family friend. I totally suck at chess, but I do enjoy it.

There are questions here and there on the net about whether he had Aspergers. I'll leave that up to people who know more about him. From the movie, it is suggested that he did not like active cluttered uncontrolled environments, and was sensitive and distracted by sounds.

I though Boris Spassky's character was very interesting.

The Green Inferno.

First rate horror film. A group of college students/student activists, led by a charismatic Latin American name Alejandro, go to Peru to stop the destruction of the rain forest and it's indigenous people by chaining themselves to trees and filming the destruction by bulldozers, ( who are accompanied by armed mercenaries), with their cell phones, while the world watches via satellite. It becomes clear Alejandro is actually just a douche bag when he almost lets one member of his team, a freshman and daughter of a UN official, to be killed for his cause. Arrested after their stunt, they're put on a plane where they celebrate their victory, when the engines explodes. Crashing in the Amazon, the survivors find themselves captured by the very tribe they had been trying to save, who prove to be cannibals and head hunters. As one after another is dismembered and eaten (not always with the benefit of being killed first), it becomes clear to everyone Alejandro isn't just a douche, but a narcissistic sociopath who is willing to let everyone else die before him so he can live long enough to be rescued by the rival forest clearing company he had really been working for.
The twist at the end is concerning the sole survivor's choice regarding the fate of the natives who had butchered and tortured them all.

I like having these sets around:

They're dirt cheap ($10), and I can always dip into them when I'm in the mood for some old schlock.

Tonight's selection:

I can't believe it wasn't directed by Ed Wood. There's a hammy narrator who speaks directly to the audience. There's Jackie Coogan (in between his child star days of the 1920s and his comeback as Uncle Fester on The Addams Family in the 1960s) as a mad scientist who wants to take over the world with a giant spider that has a human intellect. There's a token romantic subplot that lasts all of three minutes, and another one about an escaped mental patient with a gun. And there's a constant flamenco guitar score that's both distinctive and annoying. Can't say it didn't hold my attention, but I'm glad it was no longer than 70 minutes.
