Don't get upset with what I am about to say but depending on which director tackles future bat films it may not be as dark and as gritty as Nolans adaptions.
Joe Schummacer could do some batman films in the future. In fact after batman and robin here is some ideas he discussed with warner bros. I found this info from IMDB.
Although the film made a profit at the box office (earning $238 million worldwide on a $125 million budget), critical reception from both reviewers and audiences were so negative that Warner Brothers decided to end their Batman franchise and cancel the planned fifth Batman film, "Batman Triumphant". Had the film been made, the main antagonists would have been the Scarecrow, the Man-Bat and Harley Quinn (for this story, Harley Quinn would have been the Joker's daughter instead of his on-and-off lover; and at the time, Madonna was being considered for the part) and a prolonged sequence would have involved the effect the Scarecrow's fear gas has on Batman: a return of the Joker (with Jack Nicholson making a cameo).
A fifth Batman film was planned, called "Batman: Triumphant". The film would have had the Scarecrow, Harley Quinn and Man-Bat as the main villains. The film was much darker, with Batgirl being murdered by Man-Bat in the first fifteen pages of the script and Batman would be haunted by visions of the Joker while hallucinating from Scarecrow's fear gas. Jack Nicholson was approached to reprise his role of the Joker, which he had reportedly been trying to do for years, while a new actor was considered to replace George Clooney when he said he wouldn't reprise the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. The plans for "Batman: Triumphant" were scrapped, and Protosevich says his script is still kept in the Warner Bros. vault and has not been seen since.

Joel Schumacher had several meetings with Warner Bros. to get them to reconsider letting him do another Batman movie. Schumacher wanted to take the film back to its darker roots and make a "Batman: Year One" movie. Schumacher wanted to cast Kurt Russell as a young Commissioner Gordon and would have had Selina Kyle as a young, beautiful African-American woman living in the ghetto. However, Warner Bros. decided not to rehire Schumacher and the Batman film franchise remained in development limbo for years until Batman Begins (2005).

Schumacher isn't coming back for the forseeable future, and i for one feel he should stick to doing low-budget films. The only viable option for me is Guillermo Del Toro.
