Whicker's World

An episode from May 1980. Alan Whicker, for those who don't know, was a British TV journalist famous for his globe-trotting documentaries. He was often criticised for being a bit of a playboy type who spent too much time hobnobbing with the rich and famous, but others might say that his shows gave much needed relief from the many earnest, often depressing documentaries of that era which focused on wars, poverty, political and social strife and so on. It's also sometimes argued that the easy-going, affable approach of people like Whicker (and David Frost, to some degree), was more effective than the often aggressive, 'hard-hitting' interrogative style of the 'angry young men' types who could be seen on documentary shows like 'This Week', 'Panorama' and 'World In Action'.

In this episode, Whicker talks to various members of the British expat community in Los Angeles, said to number around 50,000 at the time. These included Peter Sellers, Patrick McNee, Christopher Lee and Juliet Mills. Interestingly Sellers says he loves living in LA, but would like to die in England. Two months later Sellers dropped dead from a heart attack....in London.

I've just bought volume 2 of Whicker's World from CEX, £6 for ten 50 minute shows - not bad!

Lol, and here's a famous satirical sketch by Monty Python on Whicker:

All Her Fault
streamed on Peacock+
Episodes 1 through 8
This is a complicated story. It has nothing to do with pedophilia, or human trafficking, or child abuse.
There is a detective handling the kidnapping. The detective is a nice guy. He has a neurodivergent son, and he is a good dad.
The actors were all excellent.

Tales of Unease (1970)

Never heard of this somewhat obscure series, of which only seven episodes seem to have been made. Not entirely dissimilar to the much better known 'Tales of the Unexpected' which came along a decade later. The first episode features the very appealing Susan George, and I thought it was pretty good, though not everyone who reviewed it seemed to agree.

Z Cars: Series 8, Episode 10

This series of the show spanned the years 1973-74. The episodes are very watchable, but are relatively slow-paced in comparison with cop shows like 'The Sweeney' (1975-78) and 'The Professionals' (1977-83). Indeed it's thought that the arrival of 'The Sweeney' was the death sentence for Z Cars, which only lasted a few more years after this.

The Power Game, Series 2, Episode 3 (1966)

God, this is tough going. I moderately enjoyed the first series, but was hoping things would move on here and we'd get some new approaches and perspectives, even some new characters....but no, it's (so far at any rate) still the same old stuff. How many times can you shoehorn the same basic plot into a 50 minute episode? Well the answer is obviously more times than anyone could possibly imagine.

The directors of Bligh's Construction seem to spend their entire existence intriguing and plotting against others and seeking to double cross them. By 'others' I mean various rival businessmen, civil servants and politicians, but mainly their own boardroom colleagues at Bligh's. Frankly it's a wonder that the company even manages to survive at all in these circumstances.
