Whicker's World
An episode from May 1980. Alan Whicker, for those who don't know, was a British TV journalist famous for his globe-trotting documentaries. He was often criticised for being a bit of a playboy type who spent too much time hobnobbing with the rich and famous, but others might say that his shows gave much needed relief from the many earnest, often depressing documentaries of that era which focused on wars, poverty, political and social strife and so on. It's also sometimes argued that the easy-going, affable approach of people like Whicker (and David Frost, to some degree), was more effective than the often aggressive, 'hard-hitting' interrogative style of the 'angry young men' types who could be seen on documentary shows like 'This Week', 'Panorama' and 'World In Action'.
In this episode, Whicker talks to various members of the British expat community in Los Angeles, said to number around 50,000 at the time. These included Peter Sellers, Patrick McNee, Christopher Lee and Juliet Mills. Interestingly Sellers says he loves living in LA, but would like to die in England. Two months later Sellers dropped dead from a heart attack....in London.
