I know, odd topic, but I just wanted to know, what are your opinions on "Ren & Stimpy" creator John Kricfalusi? In my personal opinion, he is a great animator, is very knowledgeable in the artform, but can be a tad harsh on a lot of subjects (especially a lot of modern animations).

Modern animation is trash, I tend to agree with John K

I have just begun to become familiar with his work. Hearing him talk reminds me a lot of how my brother talks. His sense of humor is a bit messed up at times, but I can relate. I have also heard him talk about how doing his own thing is an improvement on the mainstream stuff, and in my own way I can also relate to this.

I think he is much, much too harsh on modern cartoons. Personally, I think that whatever decade people spend as a child is the decade of animation that they love the most, so it's a really subjective thing. And while Kricfalusi's art style is certainly unique and his stories are funny in a twisted way, they're not perfect. So I don't think he has the right to go around bad-mouthing other peoples' work. Just a theory, but a good chunk of his resentment could stem from jealousy.

On one hand, his blog is a fantastic source of inspiration and advice for young animators/cartoonists and Ren and Stimpy is one of my absolute favourite cartoons. On the other hand, he can't go one minute without ripping on other shows and the quality of their animation or kind of design they have. He seems to think that animators shouldn't do their own thing.

For instance, he complained about the lack of quality in South Park. So freaking what if it's poorly animated? It's well scripted and the lack of quality in the animation makes us focus on how inept the characters are. As an animation student, that shocks me that he doesn't seem to be able to understand that animation can be whatever it wants to be.

He even has the gall to complain about the Pixar films being bland. Sorry, dude, but Pixar are masters of storytelling and character development and by contrast Ren Stimpy do not develop. That's okay if they don't- they're not really meant to. The premise of Ren and Stimpy is about trying to analyse how inept and disordered characters navigate their way in an equally (if not more so) disordered and inept world, parodying all the very worst and seemingly best in our society.

Or maybe it's just about vulgar humour...

John K is a genius and Ren And Stimpy was way ahead of it's time. Even though it might not have been for small kids It's just wrong how the Nickelodeon execs treated him and his studio. In the end they fired him from his own cartoon (they said his style was too vulgar) and started their own animation studio to continue the episodes. Only, the Nick episodes were just as vulgar. Damn hypocrites.
