What are some good anime films to watch?

I'm kinda new to the genre, and have only seen a few that I really liked. What are a few good dystopian or cerebral anime films. I've seen Ghost in a Shell, Metropolis, and Animatrix. Thanks.

ONE FILM AKIRA If it wasn't for that film you wouldn't have the anime we have today and those awesome blast attacks in Dragonball Z (Ya Thank AKIRA for that) Plus it's an awesome film although it's an anime it's an awesome film period!! !!

I think I've heard of Akira before. Thanks for the recommendation, I'll watch it next.

Anything by Studio Ghibli, especially those directed by Miyazaki. They're not distopian, but still.

Also, I agree that you should see Akira.

Akira, Miyazaki films, Grave of the Fireflies, Ghost in the Shell, Fantastic Planet (this animated film was actually made in France, not Japan).

Be warned that that one is super depressing.

Not only the greatest Anime film of all time it was one of the great films of all time in general.

Also of course you need to watch Spirited Away, Grave of the Fireflies, Laputa: Castle in the sky.

Lol Energy blasts and Shonen came long before Akira... I mean it is an amazing film but you are completely making stuff up with what you are saying.

Akira is beautiful. I like old school anime myself. Watership Down, Fire and Ice, Secret of NIMH, MTV Liguid TV, The Maxx, My daughter loves Warriors of the Wind.

Wow that's the first time in years that I've seen someone mention that movie by that name, they rereleased it on DVD as "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" Which is the original name, however when we owned it on VHS as kids it was called Warriors of the Wind.

I recommend The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, one of my favourite movies.

Also the graphics in Final Fantasy Advant Children is very nice, whith good action and such.

Gainax Animes are some of the best some examples would be Evangelion, gurren lagann, FLCL, gun buster, Die buster, Mahoromatic, and Nadia secret of the blue water. Now I'm a total Mech anime fan. So I'm also going to recommend Full metal Panic, Code Geass, and Eureka seven.

But isn't FLCL a series of several OVAs, it is also one of the tripiest things I have seen, but it so much so that it can't help but feel deep somehow.

And isn't Full Metal Panic like a total of 50 episodes or so, but it is good I have all three seasons, probably my favourite mecha series. But it is probably something that would not be easy to marathon, I remember marathoning the first season once, and it can get quite overwealming, if you are not used to doing it.

If you recomend Gainax, I will recomend Kyoto Animation anime, they did the second and third season of Full Metal Panic as well as some of my favourites Kanon (2006) and Clannad which are romantic drama comedies, and fluff like Lucky Star. Also the very popular franchise The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, which not too long ago released the movie in Japan and has been a major success, I myself have seen it and think it was one of the best anime movies I have seen, though requires seeing the series first.

Those aren't films, though.

Sorry my mistake I started thinking of my fav shows and forgot about the fact that we were talking about films. Anyway now that I think about it Escaflowne the movie wasn't bad. It was like a different telling of the story behind the TV series Vision of Escaflowne. I enjoyed the art work most.
