The Colonists had more resources then they realize. Mangrove trees have leaves rich in tannins, so if they were to get an alligator, they could make leather.

If they had found the dead pigs earlier, they could have placed them in the path of the large group that assaulted them, the stench alone would have driven the assailants away. If they could have gotten their hands on some coal tar, they could have made flames that can reach 1,800 F.
When Becka was abducted it was their obligation to swinde the kidnappers, possibly by putting the dead pig flesh in opened cans, then seal the cans up so they look as new.
