Love It or Hate It Sci-Fi Films

Self-explanatory. Mine:
Iceman- This, for me, is the ultimate "love it or hate it" sci-fi film. I first watched it a few months ago, and to say that I was unimpressed would be an understatement; I wanted to smash the DVD into a million pieces and scatter them across the universe. That may be because the film wallowed in its pathos. I'm not to fond of the use of sledgehammer sentiment in film (*cough*The Blind Side), as it strains credibility. I guess the emotional aspect of the movie is diluted somewhat when one views it alone or in a bad mood, so you should try to open your heart to it as much as you can.
Inception- I actually had to see the movie in theaters TWICE to fully grasp it. I felt that the character development was heavy handed, but the film itself is very entertaining and, I hope, a map of things to come from Hollywood.
The Matrix- 'Nuff said.

Hated Armageddon, was one of the most moronic movies ever made, I loved Deep Impact, it was a far superior movie that tried to be technically accurate

When it comes to sci-fi films, i can't stand the likes of Armageddon. It's more of a schmaltzy, vomit-inducing chick-flick with a cringeworthy turn from Ben Affleck (Thank god he redeemed himself with The Town), along with Michael Clarke Duncan and Steve Buscemi embarrassing themselves to the point where it becomes intolerably unbearable. But then again, that's Michael Bay for you.

Blade Runner qualifies as one of the greatest sci-fi flicks ever IMO, from the grimy, dark dystopian landscapes of LA 2019 to Rutger Hauer's tragic epilogue, it still hasn't lost it's cult status.

Aliens is the greatest sci-fi SEQUEL ever made, loads of aliens with acid for blood, a bunch of tooled-up marines and Sigourney Weaver's epic confrontation with the Xeno Queen = classic.

Escape from New York: I still can't believe it's in remake territory, NO-ONE will replicate Kurt Russell's anti-hero turn as Snake Plissken. I hope said remake bombs and Hollywood learns a huge lesson.

Inception is the new breed of sci-fi, not to mention a total headf**ck.

My favourite sci fi movies of all time are:


1. Blade Runner. This production hired a futurist to help with the design. It was made approx 30 years ago and it still looks credible. Also, the story itself is a story of how humans react to the technology around them - in my opinion - this is what good sci-fi is all about.

2. Gattica - Again, it is a story that takes place in the not-too-distant future and is about human reactions to technology.

3. Battlestar Gallactica (new version with Edward James Almos) - the best sci-fi tv series EVER. At the risk of sounding repetitive - the reactions of the people were true to form. The only downside was that this series did have some fantasy elements to it - where I like pure sci-fi.

Anyways - these are the ones that I like.

The ones I hated.

1. I am Legend. It could have been good. My problem is that the zombies were too unrealistic. If they had just been aggressive - but with normal aggressive strength - I would have been okay - but what is with productions feeling that they must always go overboard!!

2. The Prestige. Okay - it wasn't a sci-fi movie per se - but they ended up putting in a riduculous sci-fi premise in this otherwise interesting film (taking place in the Victorian era and regarding a tense relationship between rival magicians). They resorted to pure fantasy. Yeach!!

3. Signs. I loved a lot about this film, however, I hated it because the science was all wrong. SPOILER ALERT:










The aliens were "burned" by water. If this was so - the atmosphere of the Earth would have burned their skin as soon as they were exposed to it. They would have been "burned" by touching someone. They would have been "burned" by the moisture on the roof of the house, the fields, etc. It was just bad science. BTW - there is a tv series called "Alien Nation" which was loosely based on the movie of the same title. I had the same problem with this series. The aliens were burned by salt water. I guess they would never be able to touch human skin or they would burn from it.



4. Superman. Okay - again, I had fun with this film. Chris Reeves is the best Superman EVER!! Margot Kidder was perfectly cast and I will also consider Gene Hackman as Lex Luther - greatest criminal mind of all times. However .... the science sucked. There is just too much bad science to even begin here and someone can start another thread on why the science sucks in Superman.

If someone has not seen Blade Runner or Gattaca - go rent or borrow them. They are great.

The other ones have their moments - but a science fiction fanatic will be irritated by the lousy science which supports the story/plot.
