I learned about six months ago at the age of nearly 38 years old that I have mild Asperger's syndrome. I've been thinking a lot about ways that I compensated for my undiagnosed condition, and I realized that my fixation on talk radio was one way that I practiced "scripting."

From about the age of 20 up until almost my mid-30s I was a big talk radio junkie. I listened to any kind of talk radio, be it Howard Stern, Tom Leykis, Adam Carolla, Larry Elder, Dennis Prager, or Dr. Laura (never listened to Rush Limbaugh though).

I realize now that talk radio was my way of learning to "script" myself for the neurotypical world. Knowing how to tell interesting and funny stories, how and when to give the right glib response, and how to respond with the right put-down to someone who insults you (talk radio hosts often deal with hostile callers).

Anyone else relate to this? Anyone have any favorite radio talk shows they listen to?

I no longer listen to any radio at all, but you have just made me aware of having done what you have described. Having never really had an original thought of my own, I have instead cataloged from the minds of others much content and applications of same.

I gave up talk radio when Art Bell retired.
