Then, don't you have Kaji? 
I mean, seriously, I have read once that Kaji is basically a grown up Shinji if he grew some balls.

^^ Yaye thankee Quatermass as I believe that this is very interesting. I personally feel that Shinji is not fundamentally cowardly. Perhaps, indeed, Kaji would act similarly if he was cursed by similar inner problems that Shinji has. ^^ I personally feel that Shinji is very brave as he fought many inner demons to return to NERV and continue to pilot Evas. (I am very sorry as I have only viewed the first fifteen episodes of Neon Genesis of Evangelion and therefore may be incorrect.)
