One of the great British Directors has gone to that studio in the sky. He was in a class pretty much by himself. You youngsters probably haven't seen much of his films, but us oldsters remember fondly getting a chance to see such delights as "The Devils" in out of the way art movie houses. He was outrageous in a quite deliberate way, and I really don't see anyone about these days who could equal him. Perhaps sadly the industry has changed so much that no one could get away with the things he did.

He will be missed.

Good times. Fortunately preserved on film.

I just remembered "Ken Russell's Gardening Club" from Monty Python.

Wow, I didn't even realize Ken Russell did "Altered States" which is one of my all time favorites. I first started paying attention to him after seeing "The Lair of the White Worm."

Altered States was my first exposure and a favorite.

The uncut version of Whore is well worth watching too...

Hearing this news makes me want to watch Tommy again right now (even without the requisite psychedelics). Peace and thanks, Ken! 8)

From DenofGeek:

"While many will talk about Russell’s eccentricities and excesses, and others will no doubt evoke his, frankly, shambolic appearance on 2007’s Celebrity Big Brother, I’d suggest we’d be better served remembering him for the legacy of provocative, intelligent and occasionally brilliant movies that he leaves behind.

Ken Russell was a genuine one-off. A great British eccentric, he was a lover of high art and low vulgarity and, when all the stars aligned, one of the finest directors in the history of cinema. That’s all you need to know."

(I do fear for this forum when a Animaninacs" thread dominates.)

He will be missed. Altered States was one of the most memorable movies I've ever seen.

Rest in peace weird old man.

Kevin: I'm not really into headbanging.
Lady Sylvia Marsh: Are you into any kind of banging?

Watched Altered States last night on DVD. Now I really want American Cinematheque to screen a 70mm print of that film in L.A.

Shine on, you crazy diamond.
