Who's seen the disasterpiece "Like Crazy"?
WOW. "Like Crazy" is a movie I actually really wanted to see. It got great reviews coming out of Sundance, and I actually love GOOD romance films. 500 Days of Summer, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Lost In Translation, heck, I love Titanic for crying out loud! And I'd heard it was a "realistic" film that portrayed the ups and downs of falling in love with someone, which was also true about 500 Days (one of my favorite movies of all time). I rented "Like Crazy" expecting a similarly insightful and charming movie experience. BOY was I underwhelmed... pissed off even!
Where to start... the dialog was highly improvised, and it shows. The few conversations the leads shared were more awkward than me at my worst! I know pauses and stuttering are realistic, but too much makes for uncaptivating cinema IMO. When they weren't having bumbling, uninteresting chit-chats, there were freakin' montages of them hugging and laughing and stuff! I wanted to watch a movie, not an extended Hallmark commercial! I felt like I was just watching a couple get it on at a cousin's wedding or something; we never learn enough about either lead character to care much if they get together or not. And the plot... WHAT PLOT? The movie went like this: they hang out and make out, get seperated, think about each other, call each, other, get back together. Rinse and repeat like 5 times until the movie just decided to stop! I didn't think I could hate a movie with Anton Yelchin and Jennifer Lawrence (two of our better young actors), but MAN was this thing overhyped.
Has anyone seen it? If you have, I'd like to hear why you liked or disliked it. There's a crazy fanbase for this movie, just look at Rotten Tomatoes! The glowing reviews this movie got quite simply baffle me.
It was horrible. Had I know most of the dialog was improvised perhaps I wouldn't have been so shocked. Is it just me or did it seem like they edited it too much? It was all choppy and therefore made zero sense. I am so glad I am not the only one that is trying to figure out where the good reviews came from.

Yeah, I gotta say this movie had some of the most uninteresting writing I've seen in years. O.o And I'm with you on the editing. Granted, I know this movie was shot on like a $50 (well, no, but you get my drift) budget, but again, it hardly felt cinematic. It felt like I was watching old videos of a wedding reception. Reminded me of the way that movie "The Wrestler" was shot, but I actually really liked that movie because you felt a lot for Mickey Rourke's character and wanted to keep watching in the hopes that things would get better for him. But in "Like Crazy," I couldn't have given less of a crap about either of the main characters. They had all these precious lovey-dovey shots (awwwwwwe they're touching fingers on both sides of the glass!) as if they were under the impression we felt for the star-crossed lovers. When in reality, we knew nothing about them! (Only children who listen to Paul Simon is not enough detail or personality for me.)
I know. By then end I was trying to figure out why they even loved each other. The passage of time was all weird. Plus I knew I was really detached when all I could think about was how much better he was in Star Trek.
It was the poor mans version of One Day.
