My Top 5 Favourite Movie Trilogies

In order to do this I decided to take each of the movies from the 5 trilogies and tally them up against each other and which ever trilogy got the highest rating would be my number one. I'm only adding trilogies that are completely 3 and has not got other movies attached to it e.g. Indiana Jones.

5) Back to the Future (1985-1990)
I watched these movies for the first time back in 2008 and I instantly fell in love with them. The first movie is an historical classic with Michael J Fox and Christopher Lloyd making it good. The sequels are not quite as good as the first one but they're also enjoyable at times. I have the Blu-Ray boxset.

4) The Lord of the Rings (2001-2003)
I will be honest I've never read the books and I probably never will and I've never seen the extended versions with the exception of The Fellowship of the Ring, but only once, though I think I might like to especially with The Hobbit coming out which I've also never read. But anyway these 3 movies from Peter Jackson are truly epic with great storytelling, epic battles and memorable characters though sometimes confusing and questionable plot points. Return of the King is probably my favourite with The Fellowship of the Ring being my secondnd and The Two Towers my third but all 3 of them are truly wonderful. I have them on DVD and will probably buy them again for Blu-Ray but unsure as to which version, Theatrical or Extended.

3) Toy Story (1995-2010)
I grew up watching the first movie alot. The second one I didn't watch that much but at some point it came back in my life along with the first one and I've always liked 2 more than 1, although right now I'm not so sure because I still think maybe I like 1 more than 2. But one thing is for sure, Toy Story 3 is the best of the bunch. Great storytelling, memorable characters and top notch animation. Have all 3 on Blu-Ray.

2) Star Wars (1977-1983)
George Lucas' space opera has some of the most memorable characters and movie lines in history. The Prequel Trilogy is not that bad either, but that's my opinion. Can't wait till these 3 are re-released in 3D. To see them on the big screen for the first time will probably be the greatest cinema experience of a lifetime. Episode V is my favourite, IV is my second and VI is third. Have got the Blu-Ray boxset of all 6.

1) The Dark Knight (2005-2012)
I don't really read many comic books but I'm a bit of a nut when it comes to Superhero Movies and while they're all really extrodinary (minus a few e.g. Superman IV: The Quest for Peace) they're not perfect though I do love them alot, the good ones that is. But these 3 movies are a huge exception. Director Christopher Nolan gives us epic story telling and great characters. Christian Bale (despite his gravely voice) rules as Batman and other actors do great work as well, the most memorable being the late Heath Ledger as The Joker. The Dark Knight is my favourite of the trilogy while The Dark Knight Rises is my second and Batman Begins is my third. I have the first 2 on DVD but when The Dark Knight Rises comes out on Blu-Ray I want to buy the whole trilogy on Blu-Ray.

I read Tolkien's 'Lord Of The Rings', and then I caught a couple of minutes of the 'Two Towers' film, and I just thought... it didn't do the book justice at all. I was also peeved at the change they made to the character of Faramir, who was supposed to resist the temptation of the ring completely, as a contrast with his brother Boromir, who had fallen. It's only a small detail, but it's enough to annoy me.

Have to say I'm surprised to see Transformers isn't up there. I, myself, didn't like the first movie, and when I heard that Revenge of the Fallen and Dark of the Moon were more of the same, I decided to skip those altogether. But I know a lot of Transfans love the live-action flicks.

Not to one-up the OP, but here are my top 10 in order:

4. Dark Knight
3. Toy Story
2. Back To The Future

Star Trek: II, III, and IV are kind of a trilogy.

Especially since you guys said the Star Wars movies are a trilogy even though there's six of them in total.

I think Star Wars can be split into two trilogies, especially given the time gap between the first three and the last three, but yes, technicall, its a "Hexlogy" or whatever the correct term would be.

In any case, for me:

1) Star Wars IV-VI
2) Lord of The Rings
3) Indiana Jones (Raiders of the Lost Ark, Temple of Doom, Last Crusade - the 4th recent movie was forgettable, but again was so long between the first three and the 4th that it hardly counts)
3) The Matrix (the last two did not live up to the first, lets be fair, but still had enough good aspects to merit this trilogy being included)
4) Rocky I-III (ok, again, we got part IV, and even part V, and then Rocky Balboa, and the 3rd film lost a bit of what made the others great, but still a worthy inclusion I think)
5) Superman 1-3 (Looking back, 3 was not the greatest film, and yes, there was Superman IV and others, but I thought all three of these were great as a kid)

I like the four "Rambo" movies a lot better than Stallone's "Rocky" series. I own all the Rambo movies on blu-ray disc by the way.

The first three could be a trilogy since the 2008 movie came out twenty years after the last one. For some reason nobody ever mentions the "Rambo" series on this board when discussing movies they like.

I like the Anne of Green Gables trilogy.

That's beacause it's true though. IV, V & VI are the Original Trilogy and I, II & III are the Prequel Trilogy. There were gonna be plans for 3 more Star Wars movies which would have been VII, VIII & IX and they would have been called the Sequel Trilogy. I would agree with you in saying that those 3 Trek movies are a trilogy of sorts. They're refered to as the Genesis Trilogy, but technically they're not as you have 1 trek movie before them and 7 and counting after. Next year the sequel to the current Star Trek Reboot released in 2009 wil be released and if they make a third that would be a trilogy too. The Star Trek Reboot Trilogy I guess.

The Star Wars movies technically aren't a trilogy either since the original Star Wars(episode IV) picks up where Episode III left off. They also have some of the same actors like the guys that play R2-D2, C-3P0, and Yoda. I'm well aware of the reasons some people consider them two separate trilogies though.

Here's my REVISED top 10 list that is compliant with the belief that the Star Wars films shouldn't count as separate trilogies:

The Godfather movies never really interested me that much. I saw the first one and I thought it was OK and I didn't really like the second one because it was kinda boring and I haven't bothered to see the third one. I guess I really do not like gangster and mafia movies. I mostly like movies that have good vs evil. The Dark Knight Trilogy is a perfect example as it has one man going up against crime and corruption and doing more than that punching, kicking and throwing stuff but strikes fear into those who prey on the fearful.

That's fair enough. And to be fair, the Godfather trilogy is really two great films and Godfather III. The funny thing is that GF3 did to the GF series what films like Alien: Resurrection, Crystal Skull, and the Star Wars Prequels did to their respective franchises. Only difference is that there were only 2 GF films when they made the dud entry in the series.

5 and 6 are interchangeable. I haven't seen the Matrix, but when I do I suspect it will edge out Pirates of the Caribbean and MiB.
