basically, i can't remember if this is from a film, or from a tv show like diagnosis murder or murder she wrote...

so:
one guy invites another to his log cabin

he has him phone a secretary or wife while pretending to be at an office (set before the days of call id - they're using old Bakelite phones) and after he kills this guy - then drives back and uses the phone call as an alibi

Sounds a lot like a Columbo episode I saw once. I don't remember the title.

I did a little research, I think the episode title is Murder By The Book, Season 1, 1971.
