"The Idiot Box" is now a more accurate description for TV than ever, or would be if most modern TVs weren't flatscreen. I suppose the Internet is partly the reason for these idiot excuses for entertainment, but you'd think the networks would work even harder on making shows watchable instead of now being mostly disgusting filthy reality shows. I don't get it, nearly everyone hates reality shows and yet the networks don't stop showing or making new ones, so people must be actually watching them. Has the government implanted microchips in our brains while we were sleeping to brainwash us, or are people just plain stupid??? Anyways, here is a list of TV shows and ads that make me want to put an extremely large axe in my TV, or go watch YouTube, or even READ a BOOK:
AWFUL ADS:
-The "Only 80 Calories" Lady, where she demands the truck driver for Fiber One bars that "it can't really be only 80 calories, right? RIGHT? RIGHT?!?" I feel bad for the truck driver and it is amusing how he just drives away saying nothing while the woman keeps squealing "RIGHT? RIGHT!!??! ! Of course it's a woman, how stereotypical.
-That kid in the grocery store in the fruit snacks ad where he's "Can I have a snack Mom, PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE???" and doesn't stop until she gets him that box of fruit snacks. By the way,That most fruit snacks are really no better than candy and therefore should only be eaten in moderation, like candy. Because it really IS candy. Why are kids in every commercial either whiny little brats or nauseatingly sappy? It's NOT cute.
-ALL the Geico ads are ridiculous, but the most recent one that's completely stupid is where they have Christopher Columbus on a speedboat. Now why do they assume he would be happy on a speedboat? Maybe he would have HATED speedboats! We don't know since he's been DEAD for centuries...
-Any and ALL ads about insurance and lawyers.
-Mount Everest ads are especially suicide-inducing and repetitive.
- Any ad for E-Harmony, and that Christian online dating ad.
-Nyquil "man cold" commercials where some guy with the sniffles is acting like he's on his death bed. I have heard this is how men generally act when sick, but my dad is like the complete opposite. In fact my mother has to watch him carefully to make sure he DOESN'T push himself too hard and actually GETS enough rest. But my dad was born in a family where BOTH his parents were married to each other and his mother didn't do every little thing for him, unlike many men-children now who have been raised by single mothers and expect women to hand them everything on a silver platter...
-Robitussin "Dr. Mom" This mom gives all her family members cough medicine like... well a sugary-smiling robot. Including her husband. He does not have the plague, if he needs cough medicine he can get up and take it himself! Sexist.
TERRIBLE TV SHOWS:
-Almost EVERY show that's now on TLC. Aren't the letters in TLC supposed to stand for The LEARNING Channel? Now I worry watching any of their latest shows will make my IQ decrease. Toddlers and Tiaras, Honey Boo Boo... let's not talk about them, okay? The ads for them were bad enough.
-Every non-animated show on Teletoon (Canada's answer to the Cartoon Network). That includes live-action shows and movies of cartoon superheroes and fictional characters.
-Every non-animated show on Family Channel (Disney Channel in the States), and their animated "kiddy shows". Oh, the good old days when I could watch hours of classic Donald Duck or Goofy cartoons...
-Almost EVERY "reality" TV show. Don't get me wrong, any show that has real people in a real place is technically a reality show, like nature documentaries, but I believe Survivor officially started the "TV apocalypse" Hated it the first day it came on and any fondness for TV started heading south.
-Any remake of a classic cartoon: Woody Woodpecker, George of the Jungle, and even Looney Tunes. But maybe I'd like them if I were still a kid...
-Any show about Christian religion.
I'd write some more but I have to leave now to buy my weekly groceries. If there are any shows or TV ads I haven't mentioned that you cannot stand, feel free to reply. ![]()
You seem to have a bit of a bias here...
Commercials much like humour is subjective, therefore its extremely likely that not everyone will find them funny. The point of a commercial is to sell a product, not to entertain.
But growing up in Canada i can understand some of your frustrations with tv shows:
-I do miss the old teletoon, but to be fair they do air Star wars the clone wars (which i like), and teletoon retro is kind of a cool concept, its a shame you have to subscribe to it.
-I miss the old family channel very very much. They fact that they held on to (mostly) 90's saturday morning cartoons well into the 2000's was a good move. While i did enjoy watching some of their teen-cemedies with my siblings growing up (Lizzie Mcguire, Even Stevens etc) i also enjoyed their power rangers listing in the morning just in time for breakfast before catching the bus to high school. Today i feel Family has sold-out and should just change their name to "tween" channel, as this is their demographic now.
