Hi!
This is one of my first posts, I'm totally new here as of today.
It's not confirmed yet if I have Aspergers, but I'm almost positive I do...so I'm just going to jump right in and get involved. :P

So here's the topic.... T.V. Commercials.

99% of the time I have no idea what is being communicated in them. Sure I might recognize the product they are selling, but I have no idea what the content of the commercial was about, or what it was trying to communicate to me.

At first I'm shocked at how loud and bright and fast they are, and usually I'm just reacting to that fact, and by the time I'm ready to pay attention, the commercial is over and it's on to the next one.

One day I realized I had seen the same commercial at least 8 times in a very short period...and still had no idea what it was about or what it was trying to sell.

So the next time it came on I tried really hard to 'get it'..here's my basic thought process for your reading pleasure, lol!

"oh ok here is comes...some guy...looking at a girl...they are smiling knowingly about something cryptic that I have no idea of...
A song is playing...I'm trying to understand what the song has to do with the images...but nothing lines up...it all seems so arbitrary...was the song made specifically for the commercial? or is it a popular song I don't know about and it was added as a marketing ploy?" 8O
"ok forget the background song, it must not matter...whats going on now? I see a beach, the water is pretty....some fruit or something...and....
commercial is over...lol what the heck were they trying to sell?!?" was it the fruit?, maybe a vacation? was it a beer commercial and I didnt pick up on that? I didn't even notice a logo or anything...oh well I don't care anyways...."

So yeah that example just about sums it up, is this familiar to anyone?

Commercials have turned to lame humor because of how low the American attention span is...so they have become non-linear forms of free association. They simply don't work on me, I just get confused as hell.

Well, I do not have your problem focusing on commercials, but I just dont. Most of them are just a waste of time. They are most of them selling something I do not want to by. I usually keep my iPad at hand and as soon as commercials start I open my iPad and start checking my email, FB newsfeed, twitter account, or something like that, until commercials are over. And most of the time, when I do pay attention, it is hard to get what they are trying to sell, because they send a lot of different messages.

Some, yes; but other I do not. I guess everyone's mileage may vary on this.

I find 99% of commercials unwatchable. I hate the cameras bobbing and weaving all over the place, and cars skidding sideways are stupid and cliche. Take away bad camera work and cars skidding sideways, and there's precious few commercials left, so I zap them on my DVR.

I agree, commercials are annoying all around.
I usually just hit the mute button as fast as I can.

So far I have just about every single symptom I've seen that fits under Aspergers.

The commercial thing I described above was just something I noticed about my thought process.
I wondered if its also an indication of possible Aspergers?

Hard to tell GreyGooTheory...there are many average people that would agree with us on this as well. Is it the patterns in shows that you enjoy or is it the changes within the shows?

Hmm, not sure I follow you, I didn't really have any problems with shows, just the commercials.
Elaborate?

I am referring to consistency between jokes, plot, etc. I am assuming this was mentioned you watch a lot of TV.

What is it that you dislike so much about commercials in particular, the vagueness mainly? Also, how doe sit compare to how you interpret what you watch on TV?

They're all pointless. I wish they would just go away...

Hmm, probably the vagueness mainly. I do a lot better when the message is literal. Easy.
It's when things are implied, or you're expected to read between the lines that I get lost...same goes for shows, but usually my wife is there and I can pause and ask her to explain, which she doesn't mind doing at all. :)

I don't actually watch a lot of TV, and didn't mean to imply that.
I have a selective few shows that I watch and when they are done for the season, I just wait until the next season starts and in the meantime I don't watch anything other than movies.

Then you could very well be aspergian. Few commercials make sense to me either.

They really are a nuisance.

Also, when you realize they're just trying to manipulate you into buying something you don't need they become irrelevant really quickly.
Immunity ftw! :D

I've never understood the intense need to keep the inside of a toilet bowl white, bright and germ free. It baffles the crap out of me. (pun intended)
Its not like I'm going to stick my gum there while I wash my hands or rest my BBQ'd steak there.

Like, WTF

Yep, it defies logic.

On one level, I guess it looks aesthetically nicer if its clean. (but is it ever truly clean? it may look clean but have a billion bacteria in it you can't see)

From a germ standpoint, yeah you're not going to to be sticking your hands in there or eating off it, lol

My Aspie husband is a total freak about the toilet bowl (tries to keep it as clean as possible). And I, myself, do not like to see the toilet bowl unclean. It is not about keeping it germ free. It is about seeing it clean. I like everything as neat as possible.
