I was thinking that, since I don't get to see my relatives much, maybe I could make to video to keep them updated on what goes on in my life. but I don't know where to start. I figure I could do something, I'm just not sure what just yet.
anyone got any tips for this sort of thing?

Making a video is a great idea! I have done it myself many times, and it's much easier than you might think. I don't know what camera you are going to use, but I used the one on my Playstation Vita.
I start by making a quick 1 page script. I don't have to follow it precisely, but it helps to keep me on track for what I want to say. I set a time limit of about 10 minutes, which is enough time to cover a small basic topic. If your family hasn't seen your house, make a video tour and show off your favorite things. You could take a few minutes to record some things during your regular day so they could see your routine and what you like to do. (clear this with your boss first if you have a job). You could enlist a friend to help you make a "news show" with a special weekly report about what happened in your life (suits and everything!) Get silly if you want to, like making paper bag puppets and reading the news with them! Just be sure to have good lighting if it's indoors, and speak clearly so the mike can hear you. I hope this helps, and please let me know if it works for you.
