" DREDD " (Judge) Movie

Has anyone else seen the new DREDD movie of Judge Dredd ? (not the old , much-despised , Stallone one - which I haven't seen)
Especially the UK posters here ?
I saw it , in 3-D - the first " modern-age " 3-D movie I've seen in three dimensions (I'd seen 2-D versions always before .) .

I saw it despite the fact that I've never read the comic books and thought it was pretty awesome and it's very very underated. I don't think it was promoted enough and I don't think it did well at the box office, though it did get some decent reviews, not like The Dark Knight Rises or The Avengers type reviews but it one of the most enjoyable films of the year I think. I hear there maybe a sequel in the works but because of the box office thing I'm not sure that may actually happen but fingers cross. Also while it isn't exactly 100%, I mean it's no Dark Knight or Iron Man, it's way better than the other Judge Dredd movie and Karl Urban is a much better Dredd than Sylvester Stallone. But I have to be honest, despite how bad the original movie was, I do sort of like it, not for being a good movie but for actually being a bad, cheesy and really over the top movie. No offense to Stallone but his bad performance is actually enjoyable. The funny way he talks and is easy to make fun of, again no offense and how he always repeats the same lines and all the other over the top performances. So I guess I'm trying to say I like the original Judge Dredd because it's so bad and I love the new one more for being a great flick.

...I presume it must have done better proportionatly in the UK...It couldn't have done much , um...Here in SC - on Friday night , the last show (9:30 PM) , a 3-D auditorium , I didn't count the seats , but - including me , there were downwards of 20 customers - maybe downwards of 15 ! !! !! !! !! !!
I liked . It seemed it skipped over some of the more what I think are " British " elements - the snarky humo(u)r , being sorta , uh , fatalistic , dark - making it more " American " , a bit . I have read the comics some .

I'll be honest, I found it hilarious that they made a sequel for this. The first one was so bad! Although it did have one of my favorite movie lines (I am the law!!)

I must be the only person on earth (along with my brother) who LOVED the Stallone version. I still quote that movie all the time "eat recycled food: it's good for the environment and okay for you" is one of my favourite catchphrases. Having said that, I also enjoyed the new Dredd as well. I was on vacation in Prince Edward Island (Canada) at the time and was surprised at how empty the theatre was on opening night. That was a big surprise since I'm used to nearly sold out movies on opening night. I got there really early all for nothing

As an action movie by itself, I think it doesn't fail. It's not in the top tier best action films, but it manages to entertain me significantly. I have to say I count it among one of my top 10 favourite superhero-type movies. And I guess that there's where the problem lies, because all those who have read the Judge Dredd stories emphasize that he isn't a superhero. If the movie was anything other than a Judge Dredd movie, with Stallone playing a character by a different name, in a different setting, but with the same basic story, I think the movie would have caught a lot less flak, and would have stood side-by-side with cult favourite Demolition Man. Its problem seems to be that it fails to be a Dredd movie.

It is for similar reasons that I disliked the live-action Transformers films.

BTW I'm considering watching the new Dredd movie. Karl Urban did fine as Bones in Star Trek, and I'd like to see what else he's got up his sleeve. Here in the Netherlands, the film won't open until 11 October for some reason, so I still have about a week to wait.

There's just one underlying truth here: Urban Dredd is miles better than Stallone Dredd. At least Urban makes the titular Judge an arse-kicker, doesn't chew scenery like Sly did, and at least there's no annoying Rob Schneider!

While I found Rob Schneider tolerable in Judge Dredd, I can understand how his presence distracts from the main character.

I don't think Schneider did too badly with the material he was handed.
