sometimes I can't go into full detail as to why I love certain movies. I always watch the Nostalgia Critic and I sometimes love how he can go into great detail as to why he loves and hates certain movies. He says stuff that I've never realised before. But unlike him I can't go into great detail. The last movie I saw in the theatres was Man of Steel and I fricking loved that movie. In my own opinion I think it could be one of the best superhero movies ever made and the best Superman movie. But there are some people (mostly critics, including NC) who hate it, so why do I love it? I honestly can't explain. It's just really good. Good acting, great action and (despite a few changes) a great story. But I can't go into great detail like a legit critic or an internet one but that's the thing with me. Sometimes I can explain why I love a film, even if it's one that I favor movies like MOS and others I can't explain in full detail over. Maybe the acting isn't brilliant and there are other movies that do it so much better, but I still love MOS more than some of those movies, why? I don't know. I think my favourite movie of all time is Star Wars. Why do I favour it over every other movie I like? I just do. That's just the type of person I am.

You need to get out more often.

LOL...or watch some more movies. Okay...you like Star Wars and MOS. Suggestion: check out the original Indiana Jones trilogy? Warning: Avoid The Crystal Skull!

Enjoy :)

In my experience the things you enjoy the most are the things that you can't explain your feelings about.
Sometimes trying to put your feelings into words actually forces you to be overly analytical about whatever it is, and can ruin your future enjoyment.
Just because someone else doesn't like something you like or vice versa doesn't make it right or wrong it just is.
Billy Connolly's words of wisdom come to mind - "not everything's for you" - as in not everyone likes the same thing and some things will be right for you some won't, and you can't always understand or explain why.

I'd recommend the zen approach; just enjoy and experience what you like for what it is, otherwise you risk ruining the experience.

You can just enjoy movies, go see them and then say Blimey! that was a good one. Or you can take a film studies course, or poke around the internet for something similar. It's really when you learn how to dissect a film, and watch it to see the director's choices that you APPRECIATE film. Knowing all I know about his style, I still love watching any Kubrick movie, seeing his "touches" and favorite tricks. It also takes your breath away when you learn what kind of equipment they used back in the 30's to create scenes that still stand out.

Why do you need to explain it?
Sometimes "I like it so bite me," is good enough.
If someone else cant see the quality in it that's hardly YOUR problem, right?

btw, what's a MOS? is it a giant canadian animal with antlers or is it something that grows on the north side of trees?

Hmm, after thinking about this for a while, I've found that with movies (and most media), what strikes a chord with some people and not others is a very idiosyncratic, mercurial subject to explore. There are a multitude of reasons behind preferences and tastes, and nothing is absolute when it comes to interpretation and reaping positive or negative experiences from them - it's all down to the individual seeing the movie and I agree with what the majority on this thread say insofar.

I personally don't care much for MOS (Man of Steel) or Star Wars, but if you glean a lot of pleasure from them both, as do a lot of others in this world, then no one has the right to deny that it serves its audience (or fans, intentional or not) very very well. I guess articulacy as to why one enjoys certain films really only counts if you're studying film or writing reviews or need some in-depth communiqué or something. Though, I'd rather judge things on their own merit than take others' recommendations - but that's just me being picky, heh.

Being able to analyze movies and put into words exactly why you like them is a valuable skill and should make your enjoyment of those movies even richer.

Internet and 'legit critics' mostly learn how to do this in university comp, lit, and maybe film arts classes... If you want to develop the skill, take an online writing class...

If you're interested in some theories about why Star Wars has such a strong appeal for so many, watch these vids... if you haven't already.

There are a lot of things to admire about Star Wars and it was voted the number one favorite movie of all time in a recent British vote so you are not alone.

Perhaps you should analyze films. Next time you watch Star Wars or Man Of Steel, try to spot the director's decisions, cinematography etc that make it stand out. Read more about how screenplays are put together and become what people call a "film buff".

When I watch films, especially on subsequent viewings, I start to analyze and think things like: "Perhaps it would have been better if the characters did this....." or "perhaps it would have been better to end the film there...."

You need to find books (or videos) about the great directors and why people say they are great.
You could start with Orson Welles, for instance, a truly fascinating bloke.

Read some film criticism or take a class so that you can learn the vocabulary and about how films are made. That way, you will be able to say, "I like when the cinematographer uses rack focus to shift the viewer's attention," rather than, "I like when they do that thing with the camera." :)

I need to remember these words of wisdom for myself. My mom recently told me that I was being too overly-analytical about my latest special interests (which involve video games rather than films) and I felt like I was starting to ruin my enjoyment of them by analyzing them and trying to figure out why I enjoyed certain aspects of them, or whether it's OK to enjoy certain aspects of them that do not appeal to other fans, or whether my interest is even strong enough to be considered an obsession...

... I worry too much.
