It's that time of year again: Favourite horror movies

So halloween is fast approaching, my second favourite time of year, and I wanted to make a thread about pointing out favourite horror movies, particularly ones people might not have heard of, because everyone knows of the excorcist, dawn of the dead, american werewolf in london and so on, but what films might you not have discovered yet?

I'd like to recommend spanish horror "Rec". You might know of the american remake "Quarantine", which just ain't as good. It's shot from the angle of a camera (controlled by a professional cameraman, hooray for in-story excuses not to have constant shakeycam all over the place) as a team of firemen and a news crew are trapped inside an apartment throughout which a horrifying virus is spreading. You may think this is just another zombie movie, but you'd be very, very wrong.

Also, "Creepshow", directed by George A romero and co written by him along with Stephen King. It's a horror anthology effort composed of five short stories, all of which are damn good. It's done in the style of the EC comics that inspired Romero himself, leading to a unique visual style and tone hovering between comedy and horror. It's incredibly enjoyable.

There's a horror movie I'd like to recommend as one to avoid. I saw it a few days ago. It's called Butcher Boys and was made by the guy who made the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I wish I could get those 90 minutes back. Too late now. What an uninteresting, over the top bore it was.

Soooo many to choose from. One of my favourites that isn't well known is a Korean movie called A Tale of Two Sister, which is quite a dark psychological thriller in the east Asian ghost type story.

Another good east Asian movie is the Japanese film Audition, which is a film of two halves with a very sweet first part following this old man as he looks for love by setting up a TV audition that he is really using to select a new partner, that becomes very dark and sinister in the second half when we learn more about the girl he picks.

I also watched a really disturbing Spanish film this year (and I'm not easily disturbed), it was a really creepy film called Sleep Tight. It's tense and troubling as it focus on the evil within as we see a doorman of an apartment block who goes to some extreme measures to make other people's lives a misery. (It's also from the same director as Rec).

And to throw in a really old one (and one that isn't really much of a horror movie), but the 1932 film Freaks is surprisingly quite good and worth watching just to see a man with no arms or legs light and smoke a cigarette!

Plus we could go into Del Toro's horror trilogy, the ring series and for anime fans, Vampire Hunter D, but they are probably quite well known.

There's also some bad horror movies I like, but I'll save that for another post!

I'm just the opposite - horror movies bore the hell out of me.

I'd much rather see war movies, westerns, musicals, comedies, documentaries, ... rather than a horror movie.

Yeah I saw it from this article which tries to reference all the horror nods in it, which really shows how well Del Toro knows the genre!

I absolutely love horror films, and it's this time of the year I especially enjoy them!

Currently my favorite is Insidious, just because it was a little different and I think ghost scares are getting old for me.

I remember Quarantine, but I haven't seen Rec. The confined space adds a new element of horror.

The Blair Witch Project

Universal Horror like Frankenstein, Dracula, Wolfman, Invisible Man, and the Mummy.

Slasher Horror like Freddy, Jason, Michael, and Leatherface.

I saw a movie the other day where I actually had to watch it in two parts. It stars Elijah Wood and is called 'Maniac.' To say the movie was disturbing is the understatement of the century. I only just learned it was written and directed by French men. That makes sense considering the level of disturbing French horror movies lately (High Tension, L'Intereurs, Irreversible, etc).

The killer in this film is truly depraved. It's easy to see why 'Maniac' receives its "Unrated" rating. It's definitely not for everyone. It's POV is first person, so that takes a little while to get used to. You're brought close up to the horrors of the psychopath and it is grossly unnerving. Only see this if you have a strong stomach and can handle films like Guinea Pig: Flowers of Flesh and Blood or Takashi Miike's movies.
