It's the most hardcore film ever. Like having a brain tumour of reality implanted. It's artistic, but brutal; serious, but ridiculous.
ps. the history surrounding the director and the original author (Marquis de Sade) are almost as hardcore as the tale and film, somehow... Sade wrote it while imprisoned in the Bastille, and was lost for about a hundred years before it was finally published... and the film is considered to be the most controversial ever (with historic evidence - provoked quite a lot of countries) and the director was murdered just before its release.
