There's a new Trek series coming in 2017, that will be set in the new continuity .

The old ST was deeply flawed, to the point of yelling at the TV, but it's likely to be light years better than the utterly idiotic version we've been getting from Abrams.

I'm sure I'll find better things to do.

As long as JJ Abrams doesn't get anywhere near it, I might be interested in the new series.

I've known for a while that there would be a new Trek series, but I had also read (in almost every article I have obsessively read), that it would not be set in the 2009 Abrams timeline. How do you know that it will be set in the alternate universe? Well, if it is set in the 2009 timeline, I hope it is not a Next Generation reboot.

I, for one, will not judge the product before it has even gone into production.

Over a decade ago, I floated an idea to some Star Trek production insiders at a small SciFi/RPG convention. I proposed that the next series could portray the crew of a vessel similar to Voyager, but with the express purpose of providing services to frontier worlds and beyond. These services would be a mix of medical, police, political and diplomatic. There would be a mix of characters, as well. Some would be devout Federationists, while others would be more self-serving.

This is pretty much back to the format of the original series, but with more of an ensemble cast portraying commissioned officers, enlisted personnel, and civilian specialists.

So we'll just have to see what they've come up with - something that tries to appeal to everyone; something that tries to appeal to us SF nerds who grew up on Asimov, Bradbury, and Clarke; or something in between.

I am quite looking forward to a new series I think it is about time to bring in a new series. I heard a rumour that the next movie will be more focusing on space exploration so their is some hope there.

I did read a couple of years ago of some different ideas of Star Trek series that didn't make it. One was a series called Star Trek Federation set in the 30th Century where the federation is on a verge of collapse because they have become stagnant in their ways and they launch a new Starship in a new mission to explore new worlds in order to save the Federation.

Very excited for the new series, I'm a fan of both PrimeTrek and JJTrek, so I don't really care which timeline it's in. The only potential problem to the series, is the fact that you need a CBS online subscription to watch it. I imagine that will turn a lot of people off, and I don't want to see the series scrapped prematurely.

I am a huge Star Trek fan and I think it would be amazing to have a new Star Trek, but I'm trying not to be too hopeful, for a number of reasons. Unfortunately, I think even if it does turn out to be good, it will be short-lived due to the facts that you have to buy this CBS access thing to watch it, and that it might only be available in America. That's before I even begin worrying about what the writing quality will be like, although I remember reading that it would be a new ship and a new crew, which is a good sign.

As far as whether it is based on the prime or Abramsverse, I don't really mind providing the characters, main premise and writing quality are good. With audiences getting used to TV with complex plots and unique characters (eg. Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, etc.), this is really the perfect time for a new Star Trek, fingers crossed it does well artistically and commercially.

If it wasn't CBS-only, i'd probarbly give it a shot.
Not that i liked what Abrahms did to the latest movies, but i also liked the prime series better than the related movies; series have more 'time' for storytelling, so there is less need to compress action scenes, it might not be too bad.

I will not, however, buy a CBS subscription just for this one. If it comes available on netflix, i will watch it though (or one of netflix' no-subscription "extended service" clones)
