George Lucas Bringing 3D Star Wars: The Clone Wars to Theaters
Theatrical release to kick off new CGI series.
Source (Rotten Tomatoes)

George Lucas' 3D CGI continuation of the Star Wars saga isn't just coming to television this fall -- the new series will kick-off this summer with a full-length theatrical release.

Warner Bros., Turner Broadcasting, and production company Lucasfilm Animation announced yesterday that the eagerly-anticipated series, which will air in 30-minute "mini-movies" on TNT and Cartoon Network, will begin with a theatrical release on August 15.

Anticipation on the project has been building for years following the two-year run of Lucas' previous animated Star Wars: Clone Wars series. That show aired on Cartoon Network from 2003-2005 and covered the period between Episode II: Attack of the Clones and Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, filling in the Star Wars mythos with stories featuring Count Dooku, Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi.

The new Clone Wars will also cover events in the same time period, including closer looks at supporting characters like Ahsoka Tano, Anakin Skywalker's Togruta Padawan and Jedi commander Kit Fisto, whose fate is sealed in Episode III.

With a movie to launch it, maybe it'll truly undo the curse of Star Wars TV. I loved the Clone Wars cartoons, but the 3-minute runtimes bespoke a timidity about giving regular time slots to any SW cartoon, ala Droids/Ewoks (which I've yet to see).

For some reason, watching Clone Wars always made me think the State Games/War Within period of Transformers could have been a hit, given the same treatment, but that's probably just me.

That was true, George wasn't originally involved with the Clone Wars except as an advisor. About 12 months ago there was an interesting article about how George was getting more and more excited about it and started contributing ideas, then starting to write chunks etc..

He's very involved now.

Pity. Well, it might be good anyway. I am a bit sad that Jarjar Binks appeared in Revenge of the Sith - that means I can't hold out the hope that he'll be killed in the Clone Wars series. (Then again, it is CLONE Wars - maybe they can kill him repeatedly? Like about every third episode?) :)

While I'm not a huge Jar Jar hater, I'll agree that he was unnecessary and spoilt Episode 1.

BTW: How I would have fixed Episode 1
a. Less Jar Jar (and certainly less stupid antics / voices)
b. Half the running time - then the other half with an older Anakin - ie: First half of AOTC
c. Much Much more Darth Maul and Palpatine

I'd then move the first half of ROTS into the second half of AOTC and make the last parts of ROTS - ie: Anakin's turning - become more gradual and allow Padme to have some screen time.

Other than that the story is ok.

I didn't mind Jar Jar in AOTC or ROTS - In fact I liked the way George used him to put Palpatine into total control.
