Hi,

I guess I should introduce myself. I'm 21 years old and I live in canada.
I'm pretty sure I have Asperger's, it seems to be the only thing that fits.
My mom kind of jokingly suggested I might be on the autism spectrum
about two years ago. I don't think she really understood the can of worms
she opened.

I'm pretty good at passing for "normal" though I find it absolutely exhausting,
but the strange things you do as a child aren't as cute when you get older.
I'm a pretty quiet person unless something I'm interested is brought up in
which case I have a hard time shutting up. My social skills are decent and
I'm really comfortable in formal situations (I find the rules relaxing).
I've never really been good with most people my own age, I guess
I give off alien vibes or something.

I want to get an official diagnosis, but I'm still trying to figure what my
next steps are. I'm really glad I found this site it's been comforting.

Hello and welcome to WP! I have AS but I'm actually a good socializer as well. I like to talk and be around people but I'm weird sometimes. I often feel that not a lot of people like me too much! I have trouble keeping friends and I don't make the first move but once u talk to me first then I'll talk!

You're probably not the only one. I had a somewhat similar experience, but post-treatment. After none of it worked, I tried other conscious adaptations on my own. Those did finally work in the sense of making it possible to integrate, but if I went into a social setting intending to do anything more than kill time I was bound to be burned out and discouraged afterward. It just became a question of where I wanted to take my life. It's easier to enjoy that stuff when I'm intellectually satisfied elsewhere.

I did work as a political organizer as my break-out experience, then as a technical representative at trade-shows, and then finally as a volunteer-coordinator with a low-income-housing nonprofit. I also ran a party pad while I was high on the novelty of social success, and had an uncommonly large group of female friends. It was mostly that, though - novelty. Now that it's worn off, I don't see much that I'd want to go back to.

For me it's worked better to enjoy life with minded people (forget the like- part; just having one is a start) and to view that stuff as an amusing sideshow for when I'm bored with my real life.

Welcome to Wrong Planet! I can relate to giving off "alien vibes." That's an interesting way of putting it.
