I have not formally been diagnosed with AS but I have always known that I have a struggle socially. It doesn't seem as if I fit in and I don't care for chit-chat or gossip. I find talking about people the most boring subject on earth. Another thing is that no matter how hard I try to fit in, it never happens.
When I was younger I badly wanted other people's approval but now I find that I'm just becoming more and more of a hermit.
Any advice, please?

Well, regardless of whether you have it or not, chances are you'll probably be accepted here ^^

Although it does depend - From my experience, most people on the spectrum are prone to having "Meltdowns" Which, if we're lucky, you'll be able to identify what we mean by this xD. If not, we'll probably look for some other symptoms ;P

Hi,
I don’t know your age but can relate to what you are saying, I’m new myself both to this site and to the realization that I have AS. I spent most of my younger life pretending to be someone I was not, got into loads of trouble and inappropriate behaviour , all of which I now deeply regret. The question about becoming a hermit is one which you and I have to decide for ourselves (I am a Hermit). But is that because I’m more comfortable with it (that’s just who I am) or is it because I have given up trying.
I will probably attempt to find people who share an interest and see how it goes. The question then arises do I tell them about my AS so they make allowances or not. Like you I am on this site looking for answers and advice. I have taken an online AS test which seems to prove what anecdotal evidence already suggested . To be honest I feel more at peace than at any other time of my life.
My advice to you is, stick with it ! someone on this site will be able to help you.

WELCOME TO THE WORLD

Hi LIzelle
Welcome to WP

Yep, what you said.
Don't fit in. Distancing yourself from people. Chatting (shoot me now  )

Thank you guys for your replies. I have a Mental Illness as well so I do get meltdowns and anxiety is a huge problem for me.
Especially around people. I find it very difficult to chit-chat and gossip as I've said before and I am incapable of keeping a secret. It always comes out. Many times when people just talk and I have something to say they always look at me as if stunned and some of them have actually said they don't need a lecture everytime we discuss a topic, so I have come to the conclusion that I give away too many factual data when I add something to the conversation. This causes me to withdraw more.
I have often discovered that I am the topic of their jokes and that makes me uncomfortable.

Also, I took an AQ test online and my score was 43. I also have 3 children of which 2 are under the ASD spectrum.

:?

About the hermit part, I was like this in highschool, I was always entertained in my room playing games or music or watching movies at home. I did go to a freinds house often, but that was about the only really good freind I had. Now in my 20's I've taken a huge interests in cars, mainly vw's, from older to newer vw's I'm all for it, I like a lot of other car brands also, but mainly european cars. There's many car meets for people who like these cars and I would like to go to some if work permited and woulnd't feel wierded out by people at first because we share the same interests. What I'm trying to get to is, if there's something that really interests you then theirs likely others that like the same as you weather it's a forum or a place to meet otheres with the same interests.
