One of the main reasons I started writing fan fiction was that I read a few published, authorized Star Trek books, and thought "what complete crap!" And this was official books published under the Star Trek name! I had seen a few really bad TV episodes too, and when I kept complaining to my friends about how bad they were, my friends challenged me to write my own stories and submit them. It is a long-standing tradition among my group of friends that we aren't allowed to complain about something unless we can come up with some sort of better alternative and tkake some form of action; it really cuts down on negativity, you should try it sometime.

Some of those bad stories (a lot of early Star Trek books, the newer ones are better) had cardboard characters and obvious rip-offs of the show with no original material in them, others had no continuity with the series, and still others (including some aired shows) has gross conceptual errors with known science, like the ones having to do with radiation and reactors, something I was intimately familiar with having operated a nuclear reactor in the Navy.

Anyway, I have written about 9 ST stories of my own, and then converted 6 of them to my own universe, but 3 remain in ST. Like RedMage, I created some of my own characters, and also used minor, recurring characters in my stories, but then Peter David came along and did us all one better, with the New Frontiers books. What he did was create a few new characters, introduced by Capt. Picard and the Enterprise, and used up a bunch of minor characters from the vearious series (like Dr. Selar and Elizabeth Shelby) and put them on board a new starship, and created a new series. This has since been interwoven with the other series in the books, and is, in my opinion, the best one out there. If you haven't read anything by Peter David and like Star Trek, do yourself a favor and read his books, you won't be sorry. My favorites are Q-in Law and Vendetta.

I once wrote a TOS fan fiction on this site, which I think is bad, just because I personally think original content is good.

On another note, the most infamous thing every written: the unholy piece of crap called "My Immortal." If you feel you need to take a dunk in holy water when reading about it, that's completely fine. It's normal to do such things. Atrocious spelling? Check. No grammar? Check. Mary Sues? Check. No Plot? Check. Enough sex to make you want to vomit? Check. Angst? Check. Anything Sacred? NOPE!

Unfortunately, I have to admit something: back in the day where I would write fan fiction, I used to hear a lot about that one particular fanfic. I read it up to chapter-- I don't even know... Don't even want to think about it.

I used to write a lot of fanfics about Andromeda (another show by Gene Roddenberry) and then about last year I started writing a couple Alice in Wonderland fics.

I've written fan fics of Harry Potter, Yu Gi Oh, XMen, Survivor, Justice League, Brothers and Sister/Greys Anatomy Xover, Heroes/Fringe/Supernatural Xover and currently a Friday Night Lights fan fic
