G'day from Australia
Quasi, that's actually a fair point to make.
Unless my son brings it up at home, I rarely do bring it up, as it causes much anxiety for him. I have aspie pride for the pair of us, but he will hopefully find that in his own time and without pressure from me. I was raised by an NT mother (single parent who really did the best she could with me) as an NT child, and it was quite debilitating to a certain extent because I felt I had no say in anything. Now knowing that my child has a "phobia" about being an aspie the majority of the time, I respect his wishes and really try not to dismiss the many fears he has about life. His self esteem is low at the best of times, so if he doesn't want to face reality at any given time, we don't until he feels more comfortable in doing so. It's taken me a long time to get to this point, and he always pushes the boundaries!!
Yes, my son has very high anxiety. It's much worse than the Aspergers. We're trying to stay away from medication but somedays, if we had it, I'd take it!! !! !! !
Interesting that you son hates the Aspergers label. My boy just won't have a bar of it. We have no problem with it - we're actually pleased that we finally have a diagnosis.
He flips out if he hears me tell anyone he has Aspergers and I REFUSE to play the secret game. He's also very anxious around the home schooling thing. He thinks he's going to be seen as a lesser mortal.
Where abouts in Oz are you? We adore where we live in Cairns but by gee it's HOT at the moment.
I also have found all the forums and posts incredibly helpful - especially speaking with adults who have Aspergers. Their perspective is more valued to me than the advise from all the professionals. I've added this site to my favorites list on our Home School Aspergers blog. I hope that if there's any other struggling parents or people with Aspergers that they will join this site and find themselves some relief.
Yes, the Aspergers alone I could cope with - the anxiety is something else!!
I've been fighting against the meds for my son for over 2 years now - every single professional person who has dealt with my son have come to the conclusion that it is the best thing for him. I've finally come to the same conclusion, as nothing else has really assisted him with this anxiety. Basically it is debilitating to him, it is preventing him from attending school in a full time sense (the majority of last year he only attended school until recess each day, the rest of the time he was on some sort of extended suspension - and still he got top marks in his reports!).
I admire you for taking on home schooling - it is something I know I could not cope with doing!! Plus he needs to develop his social skills, and he would not be doing that being at home. Being an aspie myself, I do not have a large social network, nor do I have a large family (only three of us), so he needs that interaction with kids his own age. He has quite a few friends at school, although I do question some of their motives, as some of them have got him into trouble many times over.. kids will be kids though.
I'm in the Blue Mountains of NSW, just west of Sydney - but long to be living in Forster-Tuncurry!! I'm over the mountains already, now I want to be in close proximity to the beach!!
