I read somewhere a very simplific form to describe the differences between autism and aspergers syndrome and that is they looked at ones I.Q.
If one was above average it was aspergers and if one was below average it was autism. Now that was said to be a general difference if no other significent dissabling traits were present.
Of course, life is not exactly that simple... But I did read somewhere where it was used as a rough guide between the two in the past by some assessors. (Things have moved on since then as more has been found out about the autism spectrum in general).
The main reason why the old catagories were stopped and it all became classed as autiam is because it was found out that the initial cause was the same for both conditions.

I've actually hear that too about IQ. It probably makes more sense to put everyone on one spectrum instead of having different ones and confusing people :)

I think that they used to notice them as two seperate conditions in the past because one group could mask their traits while the other group could not or did not? So to those on the outside looking in naturally assumed in the past that both conditions were different because of this.

That sounds right, because people are learning more and more about conditions as time went on. Back in history, they thought autistic people were servants of witches...luckily we've moved on from that! 8O

I always thought their logic was strange. Dunked them in water and if they drowned they thought they were normal but if they remained alive they thought they were witches so they killed them. I always thought that none of that made any logical sense.
I will stick to my trains. Haha! :D

Burning at the stake and associated ideas of drowning witches prolly not a good idea on this here wrong planet .
(Just my silly opinion).

Yes, they weren't very logical back in history about people who were different in any way. Or anything come to that!

Um. And today, too? (Though, I don't think Salem has burnt many witches lately.)

I was trying to hint that people today are also illogical about how they treat people who are different. Something I suspect many people on the Spectrum can attest to.

P.S. My reaction was definitely :!: 8O  to Jakki's joke. Also  .

Oh yes, but they were allowed to do anything back in history. Now we have laws and rules about how to treat people. Well usually anyway!
