Hi! *waves* I'm a long-time lurker but still a fairly new member.

As usual, I seem not to fit any of the available groups very well...I'm neither NT nor AS, being diagnosed with NLD and ADD (as an adult, and within the past year). However, I think I identify a little more with people who have AS or a lot of AS traits.

I have both a personal and an intellectual interest in AS. On the personal side, my brother has Asperger's. When he was diagnosed, I went from total ignorance to some understanding of how he sees the world. I also saw firsthand the wonderful world of diagnosticians, special education professionals, speech and language therapists, confusion over the meaning of the diagnostic labels, overwhelmed parents, and people who just don't get it. I became deeply invested in understanding both how he experiences life and how we, his family, can help him live as happily as possible among the NTs.

On the intellectual side, I am fascinated by the brain and how it develops. I'm also interested in what the brain tells us about what causes AS and how it is similar to and different from other neurological differences. I'm a cognitive science (a.k.a. scientific psychology) major planning to do brain research someday. Please don't let that bother you, I'm not here to find research subjects or poke at your brains! I do realize that what is in some sense a "special interest" for me is more than that for most people here, it's your life.

And, obviously, I have interests outside of these topics. I love to read pretty much anything from xkcd and manga to Russian lit, used to play violin and Dungeons and Dragons, and discuss philosophical ideas for fun. Oh yeah, and I'm a female college student. Anything else you want to know, feel free to ask. Looking forward to getting to know you all. :)

Hello Mosaicofminds, welcome,

I graduated in experimental / cognitive psychology and I am currently finishing my PhD in the discipline of psychophysics, which studies the relationship between stimuli and percepts. My research is about visual and tactile (touch) perception and motor control.

Anyway, enjoy your stay on the Wrong Planet!

Thanks much! Nice to meet you.

Scientist, that's a really interesting research area, although it's technical enough that I find the articles hard to understand.

"My research is about visual and tactile (touch) perception and motor control."

Do you focus more on how vision and touch perception interact, or how they both guide motor control? What kind of movements do you look at?

Thank you.
My research is on visuomotor tasks (eye-hand coordination) and on how we combine and integrate visual and haptic / tactile information. The experiments I did were search tasks, where subjects had to find a visual, a haptic / tactile, or a visual and haptic / tactile target among distractors by making hand movements, and I analyzed the search movements and search times.

Thanks, everyone, for the warm welcome!

Hmm...I wonder which kind of target was the hardest to find? Was it harder for people to integrate visual & tactile, or did it help them more to have the extra input? (You don't have to give away any results if you don't want to, I'm just curious. :) )

Nice that you're asking. People actually find the target faster using the two modalities compared to only one modality. So they combine and integrate the visual and tactile information and it helped them :)
