So I now know what other people have thought for the last thirty plus years. Of course thirty years ago Aspergers / High Functioning Autism wasn't really identified in schools - you were just 'bright' and 'different'. I am not formally diagnosed and don't intend to be - I think the label would be more of a liability than a benefit. So the label may be neither accurate nor reliable. There's plenty of evidence of autistic like behaviour when I was younger, but much less now, I think. I suspect many autistics would doubt that I'm autistic (and I'm not totally convinced myself), and most neurotypicals just think I'm weird.

And I'm cross because I'm being expected to carry on like nothing has happened, but strangely enough I'm feeling quite fragile right now.

I believe it can be quite disconcerting when an adult is first presented with the possibility of being on the spectrum. I know it was for me, anyway.

If you're not having difficulty living in an NT world, then there's likely no harm in not getting diagnosed.

In the meantime, during this fragile period especially, I hope you find some solace in WP. Being autistic isn't a death sentence, or even all that horrible for many. :)

I think if you were "bright"--you were lucky enough to have your gifts identified--which made it a lot easier to adapt to the NT world. Just look at the world of Sports--highly gifted athletes are often given a "free pass." Similarly, those of us who did well on exams or displayed unusual gifts had often it much easier than those who were just "slow." At a minimum, we often had something to fall back on in terms of our self worth.
